Summary

Magic and mysticism come alive in this magnificent historical fantasy from the New York Times–bestselling author of the Chronicles of the Deryni. Long before Camber was revered as a saint, he was a Deryni noble, one of the most respected of the magical race whose arcane skills set them apart from ordinary humans in the medieval kingdom of Gwynedd.   For nearly a century, Camber’s family has had little choice but to loyally serve the ruling Festils, Deryni usurpers who employed dark magic to wrest the throne from the rightful Haldane liege.   Now, the land suffers under the tyranny of King Imre, whose savage oppression of the human population weighs heavily on Camber’s heart—a heart that is shattered when the despot and his evil mistress-sister, Ariella, cause the death of Camber’s beloved son.   The grim demands of justice and vengeance drive Camber far from his family’s estates in search of the last of the Haldane line. This descendant of kings will not be easily persuaded to accept Camber’s unthinkable plan. But with the kingdom in turmoil, the aging mage and the reluctant Haldane heir must confront together the awesome, terrible might of the Festils for the good of all.   The first book in Katherine Kurtz’s epic medieval fantasy series is filled with irresistible suspense, action, adventure, and political intrigue, leading Publishers Weekly to hail the author as possessing “a rare craftsmanship with narrative exposition that is also dramatic and moving.”

The island of St. Martin is the glittering jewel of the French Caribbean. When fire threatens its narrow streets and skyscraper-studded waterfronts, the daring airborne firemen of Marin-Pyronef answer the call. Their remotely piloted drones can suffocate flames before conventional fire engines could even roll out of the station, while their jumpcraft can drop rescuers onto the roofs of buildings that no ladder could reach. This is the vision that the company's founder, veteran smoke jumper Florian Archambeault, has spent the last 20 years building into a model of firefighting excellence. Now, in a single afternoon, 70 years of domination by St. Martin's corrupt Colonial Administration comes crashing down. In haste to evacuate after a stunning military defeat, four people are trapped atop the administration headquarters by a raging fire. Locked in a safe room with their air supply running low, only one fire company has a chance to save them. This is the rescue that would make Marin-Pyronef's reputation on the world stage, and finally vindicate what Florian has spent a lifetime trying to prove. But there's a problem...Among those trapped is despised colonial commissioner Pascal Beaulieu, the man who ruined and exiled Florian two decades ago. Will Florian's sense of duty trump his thirst for revenge? Can he afford to save the most hated man on the island?

The reenactment of the iconic battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg, is in its second day, and the paramedics at Aid Station Three have seen their share of cuts and scrapes and heat exhaustion, as oppressive heat and thunderstorms plague the recreated battle scenarios. Fortunately, the more serious injuries have been taken directly from the field to the hospital by emergency medical personnel. The aid station is more like a social club where the paramedics and victims of minor injuries can chat about their favorite topic: the American Civil War. All that is about to change.
With 20 minutes until the start of the next battle scenario, Eric, the senior EMT, sends the minor injury cases on their way, readying the tent for any injuries that might happen during the battle. Only Joe, a heat-exhaustion case, plus two fellow EMTs are left in the aid station. His fellow medic, Monica, who became a paramedic because of a fascination with medicine that started with her great-great-grandmother's tales of nursing at a field hospital at Gettysburg, starts to share insights on what it was like at the real Battle of Gettysburg.
Suddenly, a cannon shot booms, followed by more in quick succession, followed by thunder. Has the battle started early? Strangely, it sounds more like the sounds of battle are coming from the actual site of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Then an injured Yankee with a serious leg injury appears in the doorway of the medical tent. He starts to talk to their heat-exhaustion victim and seems to be very good at his period impression - far too good.
They start to treat the man, only to be interrupted by two Yankees bringing a new victim into their aid station, a man with an actual gunshot wound to the chest!
