Sinopse

In "The Story of Achilles," Carl Friedrich Becker crafts a masterful retelling of the tragic tale of the Greek hero Achilles, set against the backdrop of the Trojan War. Drawing on classical sources while employing a lyrical and evocative prose style, Becker captures the complexities of honor, rage, and mortality that define Achilles' character. The narrative intricately weaves historical scholarship with compelling storytelling, allowing readers to appreciate not just the mythological elements but also the cultural and philosophical questions of heroism and fate prevalent in ancient Greek literature. Carl Friedrich Becker, a noted scholar and historian, was deeply influenced by his studies of classical literature and philosophy, particularly the works of Homer and Hesiod. His exploration of the interplay between mythology and human experience mirrors his own belief in the timeless relevance of ancient stories. Becker's scholarly background affords him a unique perspective, which he channels into his writing, making "The Story of Achilles" not only a fascinating narrative but also a profound meditation on the human condition. This book is highly recommended for readers seeking a rich and immersive experience in classical literature. Becker's eloquent prose invites both seasoned scholars and newcomers alike to delve into the myth of Achilles, offering fresh insights and emotional depth that resonate with contemporary themes of struggle and resilience.

The Five Orange Pips, one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by the British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the fifth of the 12 stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1891.
John Openshaw tells Holmes about two strange deaths in his family. In 1883, his uncle died two months after receiving a letter from India, inscribed "KKK", with five orange pips enclosed. In 1885, Openshaw's father received a similar letter and died three days afterward. Openshaw recently received a similar letter and asks for advice.
Holmes tells Openshaw to do as the letter asks and leave a diary page, which Holmes deduces is connected to the Ku Klux Klan, on the garden sundial. Openshaw is killed before he can do so, but Holmes discovers the killers have been travelling on a sailing ship and sends a letter with five orange pips. The ship is lost at sea.

The Top 10 – Western Europe - An Introduction

The West has often promoted itself as the crucible of democracy, civil society and the Arts. The reality is far from that but its literature has, perhaps, more merit as a force for good. Their authors use their talents wisely as they explore all manner of subjects with characters of literary brilliance.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.
