Hilary Vaughn Dobel
Publisher: Open Letter
The fifth book of Saer's to be published by Open Letter, with the others—especially The Sixty-Five Years of Washington, La Grande, and Scars—receiving a great deal of praise from places like the New York Times, Quarterly Conversation, and The Nation. All of Saer's books have appeared on the Best Translated Book Award longlist (and two as finalists), and of the five Open Letter has published, this one has the best opportunity of winning the award. With the rise in popularity of Latin American writers (see the James Wood feature on Alejandro Zambra, for instance), there's an increased interest in "classic" Spanish writers, such as Saer, who influenced dozens of writers, including Alain Robbe-Grillet.
