Summary

Austerity has dominated economic debate since the financial crisis of 2008. Governments have implemented austerity policies by reducing their spending on goods and services, increasing taxation and cutting welfare budgets. John Fender explains how austerity (or "fiscal consolidation") works in theory and how it has played out in practice especially in the UK and the eurozone. He provides a clear and rigorous guide to the principles and mechanisms of austerity economics and offers a balanced account of the economic thinking behind contentious policy decisions. Boris Johnson has said that the UK government "has absolutely no intention of returning to the 'A-word'", but with the Covid-19 crisis likely to result in much more government debt, it will be difficult to avoid more austerity. Understanding the impact of austerity policies is more important than ever and this book offers a first step on that path. For anyone seeking answers to such questions as: "What can we learn from the UK’s economic history that is relevant to current policy?", "Is austerity ever necessary or desirable?" and "Can the harmful effects of austerity programmes be mitigated?" then this book will be welcome reading.

Black Businesses offer great customer service generally. However, we also know that many Black business owners have long been plagued with the title of offering less than acceptable customer service in certain sectors. A small but significant number have spawned a reputation that makes them the butt of comedy and conversation in and outside the home. It is a topic that has intrigued Business Advisor, Consultant, and Author Yvonne Witter enough to research the problem. She asks, ‘Has the legacy of enslavement negatively influenced our perspective on service versus servitude?’This book is the result. The first in a series to use storytelling to demystify business processes in a way that is accessible, entertaining and informative. Developing Customer Service in the Black-owned Business is the first in the Cracking a Nut Series which boldly addresses the problem of poor customer service with wit and honesty. You will chuckle, reminisce and hopefully gain new insights as you follow Paul and Bola as they discover the difference between service and servitude along the journey to setting up Boyzy Bistro.

People may be out of your life, but they're still in your head. Learn how to control the ongoing psychological impact of all your relationships and achieve happiness, success, and fulfillment.

Who's in Your Room? is a metaphor and a method for understanding how our relationships, past and present, impact our lives.

Imagine that you live your entire life in one room. Inside are all the people with whom you have ever had a relationship. The room is infinitely large, and anyone you let in will be in your room for the rest of your life. Neurologists report that as far as your brain is concerned, the metaphor is real-memories and emotions continue to influence you, for better or worse, long after their external cause has disappeared. So who do you want in your room?

Stewart Emery, a pioneer of the human potential movement, and Ivan Misner, known as the father of modern business networking, present a highly effective process for determining who should be in your room, where in the room they should be (close to the door or off in a corner?), and how to shape your room to reflect your values and your life's purpose. This tool has unlimited usefulness for taking control of your life.

In its race for eternal youth and never-ending life, what we call “modern society” has turned its attention to the Eastern philosophies and ways of life, hoping to grasp whatever secret they may have to share that has made the inhabitants of such distant areas not only look as young as ever in their forties or fifties, but also very fit and not as prone to modern-day disease as the Westerners. In addition to the secrets of nutrition, what we have come across is not only the way in which these populations feed themselves, but also their dedication to a more active, more meaningful way of life, one that is closer to the natural, old way of the ancestors maybe: today, many of the sports clubs in the Western world offer such programs as Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, dwelling on the philosophies that they were born from. Many of the aforementioned types of studios and workshops are looking at the quintessential ingredient that has made them the long-lasting and effective practices that they are. In addition to a fitter body, the benefits of doing such practice in a holistic manner include a stronger mind, one that is more ready to not necessarily fight against what life may bring one’s way, but understand it better, not resist, but go with it, find in it the elements one needs to grasp and hold on to so as to understand in order to overcome them, so as to become the stronger, wiser version of oneself. Surely, the phrase “couch potato” wasn’t born in Asia. Join us on our trip to finding what and how you can do to achieve a higher state of awareness through meditation, which is indeed the key to a calmer, less irritable, less diseased, less stressed, more spiritual and more enlightened self.

  • The Cost-Benefit Revolution - cover

    The Cost-Benefit Revolution

Why policies should be based on careful consideration of their costs and benefits rather than on intuition, popular opinion, interest groups, and anecdotes.
Opinions on government policies vary widely. Some people feel passionately about the child obesity epidemic and support government regulation of sugary drinks. Others argue that people should be able to eat and drink whatever they like. Some people are alarmed about climate change and favor aggressive government intervention. Others don't feel the need for any sort of climate regulation.
In The Cost-Benefit Revolution, Cass Sunstein argues our major disagreements really involve facts, not values. It follows that government policy should not be based on public opinion, intuitions, or pressure from interest groups, but on numbers-meaning careful consideration of costs and benefits. Will a policy save one life, or one thousand lives? Will it impose costs on consumers, and if so, will the costs be high or negligible? Will it hurt workers and small businesses, and, if so, precisely how much?
As the Obama administration's "regulatory czar," Sunstein knows his subject in both theory and practice. Drawing on behavioral economics and his well-known emphasis on "nudging," he celebrates the cost-benefit revolution in policy making, tracing its defining moments in the Reagan, Clinton, and Obama administrations (and pondering its uncertain future in the Trump administration).
He acknowledges that public officials often lack information about costs and benefits, and outlines state-of-the-art techniques for acquiring that information. Policies should make people's lives better. Quantitative cost-benefit analysis, Sunstein argues, is the best available method for making this happen-even if, in the future, new measures of human well-being, also explored in this book, may be better still.

  • Organizational Leadership - Foundations and Practices for Christians - cover

    Organizational Leadership -...

Kingdom leadership does not begin and end at the church door. Christians are called to conduct leadership in government, commerce, schools, neighborhoods, families, para-church ministries and a myriad other contexts. God has given us many gifts, and our responsibility is to be stewards of those gifts, and use them to do the King?s work. In that context, this comprehensive text explores key facets of leadership from a Christian worldview so as to equip people to conduct leadership more authentically than would be possible under alternative paradigms. The book begins with the seldom considered theological foundations of leadership while also tracing the historic roots of management, organization and leadership theories. All of this leads to a robust discussion of five essential challenges and practices--communication, negotiation, decision-making, financial stewardship and personal development. The combined efforts of these experts in the field provide a practical theology of leadership from a Christian worldview for emerging and established leaders. Here is the foundation needed for those who want to conduct leadership in a manner consistent with their faith in both religious and nonreligious organizational contexts.
