Summary

John Cooper takes the reader on a fascinating journey along the towpath of the Grand Union Canal, which meanders through what is arguably one of the most picturesque stretches of inland waterway in the county. Using a vibrant selection of old picture postcards and photographs, together with superb modern-day images, we trace the history of the canal from its beginnings at the start of the early nineteenth century as an essential means of transporting raw materials to the new factories and mills, to its eventual decline in the mid-twentieth century and its renaissance with the emerging pleasure boat business.Canalside industries thrived, with firms like W. H. Walker of Rickmansworth, where many of the narrowboats on what was then the Grand Junction Canal were built; the highly successful John Dickinson paper mills, such as the one at Croxley; the Wander factory at Kings Langley, where once the world famous 'Ovaltine' drink was produced; Toovey's flour mill and the Rose's Lime Juice wharf at Boxmoor. We visit the amazing Cassiobury Farm & Fisheries, an open working farm alongside the canal where rare breeds and exotic animals are kept, before witnessing some of the magnificent, historic narrowboats that have been lovingly restored by dedicated enthusiasts.Wandering past quaint waterside inns, we reach our destination - the attractive country, market town of Berkhamsted, with its ruins of the eleventh-century castle. Interesting anecdotes and a wealth of information abound in this well-illustrated book. Well-researched and in depth, this volume will appeal not only to canal and narrowboat enthusiasts, but also to local historians.

The British maritime historian explores the golden age of cargo liners and the routes they took around the world in this beautifully illustrated volume. From 1850 to 1950, the cargo liner grew to dominate the world’s trade routes, providing regular services that merchants, shippers and importers could rely on. They carried much of the world’s high-value goods and their services spread to most corners of the world. They were the tool of the world’s first phase of globalization. Illustrated with more than 300 photographs, Cargo Liners tells the story of these majestic ships, beginning with the establishment of routes around Europe and across the North Atlantic in the 1850s. When marine engineer Alfred Holt developed high-pressure compound engines, vessels began to steam further afield, reaching ports in the Far East and Australia. Then the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 cemented the dominance of the cargo liner. Only with the appearance of the first container ship in the 1950s was that dominance finally overthrown.

From the stars of the Netflix documentary Life in the Doghouse and founders of one of the most recognized rescue organizations in the world, the poignant story of how Danny and Ron found each other during a time they each needed rescuing, and how they transformed their home into a haven for dogs in need.
Danny & Ron’s Dog Rescue is an organization like no other. Because an abused or neglected dog can only recover and learn to trust again when it is in a loving home, Danny and Ron decided to open their doors. Danny and Ron treat each neglected, abused, and misunderstood animal like a member of the family; the dogs eat organic food from their own bowls and are even allowed to sleep in the bed.
In this heartwarming book, Danny and Ron chronicle their journey helping more than 13,000 dogs in need, telling the stories of many furry friends that have come into their lives and of their own “rescue” as they came out together late in life. At any given time, there are upwards of 70 dogs lounging, frolicking, recovering, and cuddling under their own roof. For many of these wonderful canines, their house saved them from death.
For Danny and Ron, saving and protecting innocent and defenseless canines and finding them forever homes is their passion and life mission. Forever Home is their story—a message of acceptance, kindness, and, of course, love. It is a reminder that hope and joy can arise from the darkest circumstances, and that we all can make the world a better place for ourselves and our animal friends—it starts at home, with patience, empathy, and an open heart.

“The rich and diverse history of the British aircraft industry is captured in superb detail by the author in this weighty tome.” —Aviation News

Great Britain’s aircraft industry started in 1908, with the first formally registered organization in the world to offer to design and build an aeroplane “for commercial gain.” This book tells the complete story of the 110 years since the start, all the companies formed and the aircraft they produced, highlighting the advances in aeronautical ambition and technology. It is the story of the creation, survival and decline of all one hundred and twenty-three of the aircraft design and construction companies formed between 1908 and 2018. The exhilaration of success and the magic of aviation technology are vividly illustrated by the technical and political birth stories of iconic projects, such as the Cirrus/Gypsy Moths, the Tiger Moth, the flying boats of Imperial Airways, Spitfire, Lancaster, Viscount, Vulcan, Harrier, Buccaneer and many more.

The rotary wing industry is not forgotten. The birth of the jet turbine engine and the quest for supersonic speed is included. The stories of the disappointments of failure and disaster, such as the Brabazon, Comet, Princess, Rotodyne and TSR-2, and the growth of international collaboration in Concorde, Tornado, Airbus, Eurofighter Typhoon and other projects are included, in the context of the international scene and domestic politics. The conclusion highlights the prominent reminiscences and speculates on the future of the aircraft industry in Britain.
