Beschreibung

In "Squirrels and Other Fur-Bearers," John Burroughs embarks on a captivating exploration of the natural world, focusing on the habits, behaviors, and ecological significance of fur-bearing animals, particularly squirrels. This work exemplifies Burroughs's mastery of naturalist writing, combining keen observation with lyrical prose that invites readers into the intricate lives of its subjects. Positioned within the late 19th-century American transcendentalist movement, the book reflects a profound appreciation for nature while integrating scientific insights, an approach that resonates with readers interested in both artful narrative and factual accuracy. John Burroughs, a prominent naturalist and essayist, was deeply influenced by the philosophy of transcendentalism and the works of contemporaries like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. His lifelong commitment to the study of nature stemmed from both his rural upbringing and an enduring fascination with wildlife, which he believed held lessons about simplicity and harmony. In this light, "Squirrels and Other Fur-Bearers" not only serves as an invitation to observe nature closely but also underscores Burroughs's advocacy for environmental appreciation and conservation during a time of rapid industrialization. This book is a must-read for anyone enchanted by the beauty and complexity of wildlife. By engaging with Burroughs's insightful musings, readers gain not only knowledge about specific fur-bearers but also a deeper connection to the natural world. Whether you are a seasoned naturalist or a casual nature enthusiast, Burroughs's timeless prose will inspire you to observe and cherish the environment around you.

Do you believe in God? If so, which one? Is it the Christian all-knowing, all-seeing father of Jesus? Is it Allah of Islam? The many deities of Hinduism? Or are you one of those that believes in God but not religion?

Whichever box you tick on the form, you have some kind of belief. Even if you're an atheist, you believe there is no God. That we all came from nothing. But there are massive questions that mankind has asked from the very beginning. Where did everything come from? Is there a meaning to our lives? Are we alone in the universe?

These questions and many more have fascinated mankind from the moment he could reason. And eventually we created a thing called science to discover the answers. To many, science eradicated the need for God to answer all the questions we could not answer. Delete faith and replace with scientific facts. The problem is that science has not yet answered all of the questions and many believe it never will. Or has it?

Today we are beginning to understand the complexities and even strangeness of the sub-atomic world. This new quantum realm is opening up new avenues of research and new inventions. All things are made of particles. The entire universe is formed from them. And now we are creating quantum computers that think at the quantum level. What answers will the union of artificial intelligence and this amazing quantum world bring? Will we now have the answers to the ultimate questions?

This is the story of the new scientific world of particle physics and the amazing unseen world it reveals.

Sixty-six million years ago an asteroid as large as Mt. Everest hit what is now the Yucatan Peninsula at a speed ten times faster than the fastest rifle bullet. Debris from the impact blew into space, re-entered the atmosphere as a swarm of shooting stars that burned the global forests and grasslands, leaving behind a thin global layer containing rock from the asteroid and from Mexico, and smoke from the fires. This layer marks one of the greatest extinctions in Earth history including not just dinosaurs, but also fish, plankton, ammonites, and plants making up about 75% of the known species.

A nuclear war with just a few hundred of the world's 12,000 nuclear weapons targeted on densely populated cities could plunge Earth into the same types of conditions that the dinosaurs experienced. Even a war between India and Pakistan could kill 1 to 3 billion people from starvation due to agricultural failure, while 6 billion people might starve following a war involving Russia, NATO, and the U.S.

The book describes how the dinosaurs died, and how their deaths parallel what might happen to people after a nuclear war. The book reflects on the odds of future asteroid impacts, how to stop them, and ends with what the listeners personally and together can do to prevent a nuclear war, so that humans don't end up like the dinosaurs.
