From the earliest days of the Church, Christians have used icons—images of Christ—to engage with the story of their faith. However, icons are far more than ancient pictures of Jesus: they are windows on the holy and transcendental, and they tell the New Testament story in a way that makes it real even to those exploring it from a distance.

Knowing that this is a story based in geographical fact, J. Richard Smith has visited many of the places where the New Testament story happened, and here he takes us along on his travels tracing the story of icons, to places like Jerusalem, Athens, Istanbul and Cairo, and also to the final resting place of the Cloth of Edessa hidden in the hills in southern Italy. Combining spiritual writing, art history and travelogue, J. Richard Smith invites us to discover that there is more to icons than meets the eye.

This WWII history and battlefield guide examines the Allied push across the Rhine with maps, photos, and informative text. By late March of 1945, the advance through Europe had brought Allied forces to Hitler’s doorstep. Second British Army and Ninth US Army were poised to carry out an assault crossing of the Rhine. In the British part of the operations, Field Marshal Montgomery’s best assault divisions were assembled to carry out the British and Canadian part of the attack between Emmerich and Wesel. A commando brigade and two Scottish divisions carried out the initial assault under cover of darkness and a tremendous bombardment on the evening of March 23rd. They fended off the German first Parachute Army, and by dawn they had established a bridgehead. During the following morning 6th British Airborne Division dropped around Hamminkeln, in the immediate rear of the Germans, in an operation codenamed VARSITY. By March 27th, after some heavy combat, the Allies were prepared to launch their final drive to the Baltic. The Rhine crossing, though by no means the final battle, sealed the fate of Nazi Germany. This comprehensive guide provides essential information on historic sites along with maps and photographs.

With generous splashes of popular culture and human interest, the NPR Road Trips series introduces you not only to far-off locations and unusual destinations, but to the people who inhabit them—and seek them out. Each story focuses on real locations, real people, and real history in the thought-provoking, imaginative and entertaining way you’ve come to expect from NPR.We all have memories of family vacations—some successful, some less so, and some gone terribly awry. When it comes to reporting colorful, compelling tales of family vacations, no one does it better than National Public Radio. Originally heard on All Things Considered and Morning Edition, the stories gathered here are entertaining, provocative and moving. Like Laura Lorson’s “Hard-Earned Lessons from the Family Road Trip,” in which she recalls endless hours in a hot car, eating junk food and listening to AM radio. And “Setting Sail with Family, Imperfections in Tow,” Marion Winik’s account of a not-so-perfect family reunion at sea. And “Family Camping,” in which commentator Joel Achenbach points out that camping is a serious sport. NPR knows that everyone has a dream vacation, but many of us are settling for economic-reality vacations. So Tom Goldman asks, “Who Needs a Fancy Cruise If You’ve Got Inner Tubes?” And when Robert Smith learns the price of Broadway tickets to The Little Mermaid ($121 each!), he takes a more frugal route, piling the family into his Honda Civic and heading to the drive-in. Warmly remembered, richly detailed, these stories invite you to share in the journey of others—and may inspire you to plan your own.Contents:Introduction by Noah AdamsHard-Learned Lessons from the Family Road TripFamily CampingEducational VacationsThe History of the VacationThe Low-Cost Glories of the Drive-In TheaterPink Jeep ChroniclesTaking the Great American Road Trip, Google-StyleA Summer Outing to Chincoteague IslandWho Needs a Fancy Cruise If You’ve Got Inner Tubes?Pirates of the CaribbeanThe Discomfort ZoneSetting Sail with Family, Imperfections in TowMemories of Going on StaycationLost and Found Sound: A Partridge Family Vacation

Discover how Better Made came to be, how its chips are made and how competition has shaped the industry into what it is today.
