Summary

An inside look at a "no-excuses" charter school that reveals this educational model’s strengths and weaknesses, and how its approach shapes studentsSilent, single-file lines. Detention for putting a head on a desk. Rules for how to dress, how to applaud, how to complete homework. Walk into some of the most acclaimed urban schools today and you will find similar recipes of behavior, designed to support student achievement. But what do these “scripts” accomplish? Immersing readers inside a “no-excuses” charter school, Scripting the Moves offers a telling window into an expanding model of urban education reform. Through interviews with students, teachers, administrators, and parents, and analysis of documents and data, Joanne Golann reveals that such schools actually dictate too rigid a level of social control for both teachers and their predominantly low-income Black and Latino students. Despite good intentions, scripts constrain the development of important interactional skills and reproduce some of the very inequities they mean to disrupt.Golann presents a fascinating, sometimes painful, account of how no-excuses schools use scripts to regulate students and teachers. She shows why scripts were adopted, what purposes they serve, and where they fall short. What emerges is a complicated story of the benefits of scripts, but also their limitations, in cultivating the tools students need to navigate college and other complex social institutions—tools such as flexibility, initiative, and ease with adults. Contrasting scripts with tools, Golann raises essential questions about what constitutes cultural capital—and how this capital might be effectively taught.Illuminating and accessible, Scripting the Moves delves into the troubling realities behind current education reform and reenvisions what it takes to prepare students for long-term success.

The engrossing memoir of a plastic and reconstructive surgeon involved in groundbreaking and life-changing procedures

Through his work in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Donald Laub changed the lives of thousands of people who had been shunned by society. Dr. Laub’s influence fostered the development of three key areas in the surgical profession: pioneering and influencing international humanitarian medical missions in the developing world, being at the forefront of gender affirmation surgery for transgender people since 1968, and the education and training of over 50 plastic and reconstructive surgeons.

His unstinting efforts to surgically correct cleft palates gave new lives to thousands of children in developing countries. As one of the original surgeons to perform gender affirmation surgery, Laub not only continually improved on his methods, but he also became a tireless advocate for the rights of transgender people. His non-profit foundation (Interplast, now called ReSurge International) has sent thousands of multidisciplinary teams to perform transformative and reconstructive surgery in the developing world.

Second Lives, Second Chances is more than just a memoir; it’s a testament to how the determination of one person can bring others together to make a lasting difference in the world.

There is far more to Switzerland than beautiful scenery, chocolate, watches, faceless bankers, and spotless cities. The real Switzerland is full of surprises and anything but bland. This small, rugged, landlocked country at the heart of Europe has been a confederation since the first three cantons came together in a defensive alliance in 1291. Four national languages are spoken within its borders. Its present twenty-six cantons are largely autonomous and retain their individual characters. In this grassroots democracy real power lies with the people, who exercise it directly through frequent referendums. Swissness is, above all, a spirit of independence and of communal involvement.

3 books in a bundle!Book 1: As we all know, we only use a small portion of our brain, and just like muscles in other parts of our body, the brain can be trained to function better. The author will take you by the hand and show you what’s possible, and you will be amazed at what you are capable of. No fluff, just getting to the point and indicating all the power of the mind you aren’t using. Book 2: You may have wondered how to solve a crossword puzzle, decode cryptograms, and increase your vocabulary. Even though this short guide won’t expand too much on any specifics, you’ll learn the basics of some of these games, the benefits, and come to know several combinations.Book 3: Do you want to learn more faster? You’ve come to the right place. There are so many people in this world who spend hours, days, or years learning the same thing others learn 10 times faster. It’s a waste of time. Let’s face it. We can do better. You may be a genius without realizing it. The problem is that most people don’t use the full capacity of their brain. And most of them don’t even use the smallest part. But do not despair. There is hope for everyone. All you have to do is learn how to do better. Our education systems sometimes sway to a certain method, only to have you discover that others things work better. We’ll break it all down in this audiobook and put you on the right path, the path to true intelligence, consistency, and acceleration.
