Summary

An astonishing account of Cuban exiles, CIA informants, and cocaine traffickers in Florida by the New York Times–bestselling author of South and West. In Miami, the National Book Award–winning author of The Year of Magical Thinking looks beyond postcard images of fluorescent waters, backlit islands, and pastel architecture to explore the murkier waters of a city on the edge.   From Fidel Castro and the Bay of Pigs invasion to Lee Harvey Oswald and the Kennedy assassination to Oliver North and the Iran–Contra affair, Joan Didion uncovers political intrigues and shadowy underworld connections, and documents the US government’s “seduction and betrayal” of the Cuban exile community in Dade County. She writes of hotels that offer “guerrilla discounts,” gun shops that advertise Father’s Day deals, and a real-estate market where “Unusual Security and Ready Access to the Ocean” are perks for wealthy homeowners looking to make a quick escape. With a booming drug trade, staggering racial and class inequities, and skyrocketing murder rates, Miami in the 1980s felt more like a Third World capital than a modern American city. Didion describes the violence, passion, and paranoia of these troubled times in arresting detail and “beautifully evocative prose” (The New York Times Book Review).   A vital report on an immigrant community traumatized by broken dreams and the cynicism of US foreign policy, Miami is a masterwork of literary journalism whose insights are timelier and more important than ever.

Since 1956 when Ontario’s historical plaquing program was begun, more than 1,000 markers have been erected throughout the province.
The range of subjects commemorated is astonishing – from mining rushes in northern Ontario to the invention of the socket-head screw … from Harold Innis to Stephen Leacock … from the typhus epidemic of 1847 to the discovery of insulin. Popular culture is also well represented: "Beautiful Joe" commemorates an internationally successful novel about a dog; "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" celebrates a famous romantic ballad; "Jumbo" marks the spot where a beloved circus elephant died.
The history of Ontario, like its geography and its people, is vast and varied. Whenever you drive the highways, hike the countryside, or stroll through your own neighbourhood, this book can be a guide.
    There is much to discover.

A complete guide for everything you need to experience a great Long Weekend in Cannes, one of the jewels of the French Riviera. You don’t have to go to Cannes in May during the Film Festival (it’s impossible to get rooms anyway). Cannes is as good in winter as it is in summer. (Even Cary Grant and Grace Kelly enjoyed it off season.)

A master chronicler of the African-American experience, Richard Wright brilliantly expanded his literary horizons with Pagan Spain, originally published in 1957. An amalgam of expert travel reportage, dramatic monologue, and arresting sociological critique, Pagan Spain serves as a pointed and still-relevant commentary on the grave human dangers of oppression and governmental corruption.
The Spain Richard Wright visited in the mid-twentieth century was not the romantic locale of song and story, but a place of tragic beauty and dangerous contradictions. The portrait he offers in Pagan Spain is a blistering, powerful, yet scrupulously honest depiction of a land and people in turmoil, caught in the strangling dual grip of cruel dictatorship and what Wright saw as an undercurrent of primitive faith.

Have you ever been down in your life? Deep down to the bottom, so deep that it was not easy to stand up and move on? When your last thought was is this the end, when the movie of your life started to roll back into your mind. A kind of feeling of helplessness coupled with severe physical pain. A state of mind such as when a boxer is hit so hard, he is still standing, but barely conscious, slowly his eyes are darkening before him, he stumbles, but he is still standing, with hands raised still ready for a fight, have you ever had that feeling? What does the boxer think in this state of mind? Whether he can still win the match, or maybe he can still pull off a win somehow or at least hang on until he hears the bell? If he could hold on until the end it would be due to his preparedness and strength! In such a situation, he can't be a winner! Or can he?

This is similar to how we may react in an unexpected crisis. By not being aware of the danger signs, or not noticing them, we can be placed into a sudden and unpredictable situation. Such as running into an armed person threatening and demanding our valuables, a random shooter in the street, a man in the street stabbing people with a knife, a suicide bomber, a major accident, or a natural disaster with mass casualties. At this point, if we do not have the experience and knowledge, or at least imagined what we should do in these situations, then like the boxer, or even worse we can find ourselves knocked out and on the floor before, the “bell rings”.

How well are we prepared to deal foreseeable and unforeseeable dangers?  Do we know what to do when an unexpected event occurs? Can we recognize and manage the security risks realistically? Are we taking measures to reduce and eliminate the risks of our own safety during an incident or accident? What can we do - how much "Reaction Time" is available to us to do something during an unexpected and serious incident. "When the shit hits the fan”? This book is about how to deal with these types of situations and how to help to cope with all the above.

Don’t play the silly bugger in front of your mates! Take a deep dive into British language and culture with this “hilarious and entertaining” reference (Chicago Tribune).   Brits and Americans dress the same, eat at the same chain restaurants, and pass music back and forth across the Atlantic, and our national leaders are practically conjoined twins. But the second the Brits open their mouths, all bets are off. So don’t dream of visiting the United Kingdom, dating a Brit, or truly understanding what Jude Law is saying without this handy, hilarious, and informative guide to Britspeak.   With the cheekiness of Austin Powers and the tidbit quotient of Schott’s Miscellany, screenwriter Jonathan Bernstein’s collection of Cockney rhyming slang, insults culled from British television shows of yore, and regional and “high British” favorites provides hours of educational, enlightening, even life-saving hilarity. And if it doesn’t accomplish that, at least you’ll be aware that when a British citizen describes you as a “wally,” a “herbert,” a “spanner,” or a “bampot,” he’s not showering you with compliments. Knickers in a Twist is as indispensable as a London city guide, as spot-on funny as an episode of The Office, and as edifying as Born to Kvetch and Eats, Shoots and Leaves.   “Indispensable.” —Vanity Fair   “Will probably do more for revolutionizing the way you and your nearest and dearest address one another than any other book out this year . . . Often bring[s] an overt chuckle.” —Edge New York
