Summary

Jimmy Webb is ‘America’s Songwriter’. His deep, complex songs have been recorded by artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to Carly Simon to R.E.M to Art Garfunkel to Donna Summer. He is the youngest man ever inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, the only artist ever to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics and orchestration, and his chart-topping career has, so far, lasted fifty years, most recently including a Kanye West rap and a new classical nocturne.

In 1969, Webb was a ‘heavy pot smoker, sexual adventurer, and hopelessly liberal Democrat who hated the war in Vietnam’. Four years later, he was living in his gated mansion, lying for John Lennon and stashing hundred dollar bills and cocaine in his house-safe. During this whirlwind of hedonism, in 1973, Webb accidentally over-dosed on what proved to be street-level PCP. When he awoke from his coma, he wasn’t even able to recognise a piano...

In The Cake And The Rain, Webb takes the reader through his life and his choices which led him to this tragic moment. Rich with a sense of time and place, with the voices of characters both lost and celebrated, and with the same youthful spirit which catapulted him into a moneyed and manic world of stardom, this is the sunning memoir of one of the greatest songwriters of all time: a man with unfathomable talent – and luck.

Set in a period of invasion, military conflict, social and political chaos perpetrated by the Tudor conquest of Ireland, the story of Eleanor, Countess of Desmond recounts the heroic efforts of a woman to protect her family against insurmountable odds.
Aristocratic, educated, intelligent and able, Lady Eleanor Butler's destiny was as a wife and mother. But marriage to Garret FitzGerald, the powerful Earl of Desmond, hurls her headlong into a maelstrom of invasion, rebellion, intrigue, appalling cruelty, double-dealing, confiscation plantation, famine, social and political meltdown, as she and her husband become embroiled in a struggle to the death against the formidable, Machiavellian government of Queen Elizabeth I of England.
Enduring imprisonment, exile, poverty, hunger and deprivation, her only son held hostage in the Tower of London, her mission to save the House of Desmond, her husband, her children and herself from annihilation becomes Eleanor's obsession and for which she will sacrifice anything, including herself. When all seems lost, like some latter-day phoenix, she rises, time after time, to bravely confront each new challenge.
The life of Eleanor, Countess of Desmond is the story of the triumph of the human spirit against the most horrific adversity.
In this vigorous and deeply moving biography that has all the constituents of a Shakespearean tragedy, sourced from primary contemporaneous manuscripts, including the Countess of Desmond's own letters, Anne Chambers, author of the bestselling Granuaile, vividly brings the life of this neglected heroine to light against the backdrop of one of the most convoluted and traumatic periods in Irish history.

The Nobel Prize–winning author of Thérèse Desqueyroux shares fascinating insights through correspondence with Albert Camus, Jean Cocteau, and others. Best known as France’s great Catholic novelist, François Mauriac was also a playwright, poet, critic, journalist, and member of the Académie Française. He was an influential public intellectual who criticized the Catholic church for supporting Francisco Franco and opposed French rule in Vietnam. As a columnist for Le Figaro, Mauriac engaged in a famous dispute with Albert Camus about the course of France after its liberation from Nazi occupation.   In this collection of letters, Mauriac delves into a variety of topics—from the death of Georges Bernanos to the correspondence between Paul Claudel and Andre Gide, and the Routier youth movement—in exchanges with fellow authors, artists, and intellectuals, as well as the readers of his various articles and columns.

From the author of the New York Times Notable Book, The Dressing Station: “A gripping memoir” of a doctor’s education on the battlefield (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).   Inspired by his father’s time as a military surgeon in World War II, Jonathan Kaplan became a doctor and was appointed to a post at a woefully understaffed South African general hospital in a black township. Fleeing apartheid, he traveled the globe in search of sanctuary, experiencing riots, tropical fevers, political upheaval, and a jungle search for a lost friend. Kaplan eventually landed in Angola, taking charge of a combat-zone hospital, the only surgeon for 160,000 civilians, where he was exposed daily to the horrors of warfare.   This “revealing” memoir unflinchingly captures the experiences of a man who’s devoted his career and his life to saving people caught in the crossfire of war (Los Angeles Times).   “[Kaplan] tells stories with the rawness and incomprehensibility of life itself. His words transport the reader to places most would fear to go.” —Publishers Weekly
