Synopsis

If you want to earn money from a website, you must first attract visitors to the site. It's similar to having a store on the high street or in a retail mall. If no one discovers your store and enters, it makes no difference how elegant your products are or how competitive your prices are; you will never generate any sales until you begin attracting potential consumers. In the world of internet commerce, the same rules apply. No visitors to your site equates to no potential customers stepping into your physical store, resulting in no sales. As a result, you must employ strategies and approaches that will ensure that your site receives hundreds, if not thousands, of daily visitors. There are numerous ways to accomplish this, and once your firm is established, you should employ every traffic generation technique available to maximize the number of visits you receive. However, some of the quickest and most efficient techniques to persuade people to visit your sales page also need money, which you may not have accessible right now. For instance, employing Google's AdWords Pay-Per-Click internet advertising program will result in people landing on your page within hours, making it incredibly efficient in this regard. However, unless you are quite knowledgeable with AdWords, it can be an extremely expensive method of getting traffic, and the number of inexperienced internet marketers who have been severely 'burned' by their first few AdWords ads is legion. Additionally, there is another issue to consider. While online advertising programs such as AdWords remain incredibly effective, their effectiveness is dwindling as people become more aware that when they see 'Sponsored Links' on a page, they are viewing paid advertising. People in general, and internet users in particular, appear to have a growing aversion to visiting websites that employ paid advertising to market their products and services, maybe because they feel that websites that pay to advertise will always be those attempting to sell them something. Despite what those of us who manage internet-based businesses would like to believe, the majority of people do not use the internet to make purchases. They do so in order to obtain information and answers to their questions, and in most cases, they are attempting to obtain this information for free.

In 1989, Brad Schaeffer was working as an artist when his trader brother invited him to visit the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Schaeffer promptly quit his job and became a clerk in that most iconic arena of raw capitalism. During the next six years, Schaeffer rose from clerk to trader, making markets on Eurodollar options in Chicago and heating oil options in New York. In that time, jammed literally shoulder-to-shoulder, he screamed, flailed his arms, hurled expletives, and pushed and shoved his way through his day.

In Life in the Pits, Schaeffer recalls the uneasy camaraderie of working right next to fierce competitors, the sheer intensity of dealing in stacks of money changing hands with a simple scream or hand signal, and the hijinks, excesses, and collection of characters as colorful as the jackets they wore, giving the listener an intimate look into what life was like down in the financial mosh pits.

A worthy successor to Liar's Poker and Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, Life in the Pits offers nuggets of wisdom on what makes a successful trader and the rules all must follow to survive in such an unforgiving environment. Schaeffer's often hilarious, yet sometimes profound, reflections take us on his personal journey from penniless artist to moving millions of dollars' worth of commodities in the blink of an eye.

In the uncertain, changing, global and interconnected world, the 'alpha' or 'hero' leadership style alone is outdated and inadequate. Quieter professionals, who are often overlooked or taken advantage of without recognition, have immense value to contribute to organisations. In this book, Megumi Miki shares her own experience and those of many other quiet professionals who have achieved great success in the business environment.
Megumi believes that a shift in our beliefs about leadership will allow talented quiet professionals to view their quiet nature as a strength and to succeed in their own way, rather than seeing it as a disadvantage. She aims to empower quieter professionals and those outside majority groups to fulfil their potential.
Quietly Powerful challenges quiet professionals to reframe the story they tell themselves about their leadership potential - and encourages organisations to expand their ideas about what good leadership looks, sounds and feels like.
