Summary

An invaluable resource for supporting children with juvenile diabetes—also known as Type 1.

From 2001 to 2009, the number of American children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes rose 23 percent. While scientists and government organizations assess the reasons for the increase, parents are left to deal with its day-to-day ramifications, and to guide their children through the discovery and treatment process.

Jeff Hitchcock, the editor of this volume, was in desperate need of advice for how to best support his young daughter after her diagnosis. When he searched for support, he was shocked by how little information existed. So he started his own support group, Children with Diabetes. And now, more than twenty years later, Children with Diabetes has answered more than twenty thousand questions from other parents, gets more than twenty thousand daily hits on its website, and has a highly respected Diabetes Team, a wealth of on-call experts for parents in need of support.

In this volume, he has collected 101 tips for parents answering questions such as: What does the diagnosis mean? How do I get help? Should I change my child’s eating habits? What does insulin mean, and how is it used? And what should I tell my child’s teacher? For ease of reference, they’re categorized, so answers can quickly and easily be found—in simple, jargon-free, and easy-to-understand language.

Published in New Orleans in 1885, one of the great classics of Creole cuisine, believed to be the first Creole cookbook in print.

Although La Cuisine Creole was printed anonymously in 1885, Lafcadio Hearn is generally accepted as the author of this Creole culinary classic. In his introduction, Hearn describes the intriguing origin of this unique cuisine, explaining that, “it partakes of the nature of its birthplace—New Orleans—which is cosmopolitan in its nature, blending the characteristics of the American, French, Spanish, Italian, West Indian and Mexican . . . There are also obvious influences from Native Americans, African Americans, and others in the American melting pot.” Among the “many original recipes and other valuable ones heretofore unpublished” included in the book are Gombo file, Bouille-abaisse, Courtbouillon, Jambolaya, Salade a la Russe, Bisque of Gray-fish a la Creole, Pousse Café, Café brule, Okra Gombo, Grenouilles Frites, Pain Perdu, Sangaree, and a marvelous collection of fish, seafood, and game recipes. This book is a collection of delightful and unusual recipes from the Second World War. Taken from the archives of IWM, the recipes show the ingenuity and creativity behind dishes rustled up out of meagre rations - from austerity recipes such as scrap bread pudding, potato pastry and sheep's heart pie to hearty English favourites including Lancashire hot pot, Queen's Pudding and crumpets. With colour images of wartime posters throughout and an introduction by an IWM historian, it is a fascinating look into what people ate in wartime.

Whole hog barbecue is a culinary art form that is both disappearing and experiencing a renaissance. In The One True Barbecue, Rien Fertel chronicles the uniquely southern art of whole hog barbecue-America's original barbecue-through the professional pitmasters who make a living firing, smoking, flipping, and cooking 200-plus pound pigs.More than one hundred years have passed since a small group of families in the Carolinas and Tennessee started roasting a whole pig over a smoky, fiery pit. Descendants of these original pitmasters are still cooking, passing down the recipes and traditions across generations to those willing to take on the grueling, dangerous task. This isn't your typical backyard pig roast, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart.Fertel finds the gatekeepers of real southern barbecue to tell their stories and pays homage to the diversity and beauty of this culinary tradition. For anyone who has enjoyed the heavenly taste of tender, smoky, tangy whole hog, The One True Barbecue illuminates the origins and nuances of America's one true cuisine, and is an eye-opening and deeply enjoyable look at the fascinating and complex makeup of southern heritage and tradition.
