Summary

An award-winning novel of lesbian identity and camaraderie amid violence and war Ruth Wheeler is the one-armed caretaker of a motley crew of boarders living in her rooming house in Vancouver, British Columbia. The miscreants and outcasts in residence include a sexually confused academic, a one-time-dope-addict-turned-law-student, a high-minded deserter of the Vietnam War, a socially conscious female radical, and a gay man on the run from the cops. Despite personal differences and a turbulent outside world teeming with police brutality, the renters’ affection for one another grows and they form a progressive and idealistic “chosen family.”   However, Ruth’s devoted and assimilative spirit is put to the test when her property is slotted to be destroyed by developers. The household packs up and sails to Galiano Island, where they establish a new home, start a business, and strive to overcome the initial antipathy of their neighbors. They even decide to collectively raise a baby born from an unwanted pregnancy.   Winner of the 1978 Canadian Authors Association Best Novel of the Year Award, The Young in One Another’s Arms stands as one of the most sophisticated portrayals of an alternative model for domestic life.

    The White Knight
It’s a Hollywood cliché: the hot and handsome bodyguard. But in the case of LAPD Detective Daniel Moran, it’s all true. Dan is everything Sean ever wanted in a leading man, but Dan’s kind of an old-fashioned guy. It’s his job to keep Sean safe and in one piece -- happy is someone else’s problem.

Two Parisians recount the story of their friendship while trapped in the Cévennes Mountains in this #1 international bestselling novel.   When we meet Billie, she is trapped in a gorge in the Cévennes National Park of France. There with her, injured and delirious with pain, is her best friend Franck. The two have relied on each other since they met years ago in Paris. As darkness encroaches, Billie recounts stories from their lives to stave off panic. Alternating between recollections of their childhoods and their dire present predicament, what unfolds is a moving tale of friendship and resilience.   A bright kid, Franck’s future was menaced at every turn by his judgmental father and the bigotry surrounding him. As for Billie, she was willing to do anything and everything to escape from her abusive and alcohol-addled family. From the moment they met, Billie and Franck watched out for each other. Soon they became each other’s chosen family through the best and worst moments of growing up in the City of Light.   Translated into more than twenty-five languages, Billie is a beautifully crafted novel that conveys a positive message about overcoming life’s trials.

Days after completing her fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology, thirty-five-year-old Aki Williams travels from her home in Los Angeles to a small town in Illinois, interviewing for a job that she doesn’t want. What she does want is to meet her biological sister, Jack Camdon, a sister whom she didn’t know existed until she dreamt of her. Upon their meeting, many things surprise her: that Jack’s a lesbian with a wife and children; that she’s a dreamer who dreams in spirit animals; and that she’s a medicine woman, deeply rooted in the Ojibwe culture.
Three years ago on Sunday, forty-three-year-old professor of archaeology, Carsyn Lyndon, lost her parents and her wife in a tragic accident. Since, she’s suffered from PTSD and loneliness. She’s kind-hearted and handsome but dates no one. When she meets Aki at her four-year-old Godson’s birthday party, they’re incredibly attracted to one another, and those feelings intensify during a family camping trip—a particularly interesting development for Aki since prior to that she’d never considered that she might be a lesbian. As Aki comes to terms with her sexuality, Carsyn renews a vow not to make the same mistake twice, a mistake that had devastating consequences.
With seemingly no middle ground, an accident will bring them together, forcing them to re-examine their priorities. But will love, even love at first sight, be enough for them to move forward as a couple?
