Summary

“It's rare, to the point of near non-existence, to find a book that has such literary weight and heft, yet reads like a sonnet. I look at it in puzzlement, wondering how Jamie Quatro gave such breadth, depth and intensity in so few words. And it's funny, and real, and painful, so painful. Also a shot of light. An education. A mirror. Terrifying.”—Samantha Harvey (author of The Wilderness and Dear Thief)Jamie Quatro’s remarkable first book of stories I Want To Show You More published to spectacular reviews, announcing her arrival to American letters as “a writer of great originality” (New York Times Book Review). Now, with her debut novel, Fire Sermon, Quatro delivers a startlingly original portrait of an obsession and the complexities of a marriage. Married twenty years to Thomas and living in Nashville with their two children, Maggie is drawn ineluctably into a passionate affair while still fiercely committed to her husband and family.  What begins as a platonic intellectual and spiritual exchange between writer Maggie and poet James, gradually transforms into an emotional and erotically-charged bond that challenges Maggie’s sense of loyalty and morality, drawing her deeper into the darkness of desire.Using an array of narrative techniques and written in spare, elegant prose, Jamie Quatro gives us a compelling account of one woman’s emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual yearnings—unveiling the impulses and contradictions that reside in us all.  Fire Sermon is an unflinchingly honest and formally daring debut novel from a writer of enormous talent.

    New neighbors just moved in and they are very interesting. The wife gets spanked by the husband!
    My husband Chad disciplines me, and I was used to getting a little red-bottomed, but you should have seen how this man dominated his wife's bottom. I was so jealous.
    I just had to feel this man's big, masculine hands getting my bottom nice and red. So I devised a plan. On Saturday, when my husband was at work, I would get the neighbor so mad that I messed up his yard that he'd have to spank me!

    I don't know when my husband and I started getting so kinky.
    Spanky would be the right word. He started spanking me for fun in the bedroom, and soon enough he was spanking me all over the house for all kinds of reasons!
    One day, I burnt the cookies and dreaded my husband coming home to punish me. Would he use his hand, a brush, a belt, or the new paddle I got him for his birthday?
    Or would he use all of them in one spanking?!

    Amelia is a curious and adventurous young woman. Perhaps too curious. She should never have trespassed in the forbidden room. Should never have become so wantonly excited by the depraved painting and objects found within it. And now she must be punished. It would seem that Lord Mountjoy, her protector and mentor, has hidden depths. He will be the one to punish her. He will be the one to inflict pleasure—and pain—beyond measure. And Amelia will be his—forever!

    ~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~
    With a last look around, she pushed hard against the heavy wooden door and slipped inside the forbidden room, quietly closing the door behind her. As she turned around she caught her breath; before her was a bedroom unlike any she had ever seen. She stared at the ghastly shackles, chains and whips that lined the walls, along with some pictures that she couldn’t bring herself to look at. There were horrifying black masks and chairs with leather straps and some weird contraptions, as well as something that resembled the male anatomy modeled in wood
    She began to panic, and as instincts took hold she turned to flee. She tried the door, but it was stuck. She pulled the handle, and with growing horror she realized that in her haste she had locked it from the inside. Tears welled in her eyes as she pulled out the key, but it skittered and rattled as she tried to fit it back into the keyhole. It didn't fit. The key only worked from the outside. Finally, she gave in to panic, pounding on the door and screaming for help. But no one could hear her, and no one came. She fell to the floor against the door as she began to cry.
    After a while, she pulled herself together. It was hardly as if she would be stuck here forever…someone would come looking for her. And in the meantime, she would do what she had set out to do…explore. She picked herself up and slowly walked around the room, carefully looking at everything. Whatever secrets this strange room held, they would reveal themselves to her.
