Published in 1873 in New York, The New Housekeeper’s Manual was written by Catharine Esther Beecher and her sister Harriet Beecher Stowe, two of the most influential women writers and activists of their time. Both women exerted profound influence on American letters and on the shape of American domestic life and educational reform. The book combines two works by the sisters in one volume. The American Woman’s Home: Or Principles of Domestic Science describes kitchen and home design, coping with kitchen appliances and newly invented gadgets, cooking healthful food and drink, caring for the sick with medical recipes, and gardening with plants and domestic animals. The Handy Cook-Book is a “complete, condensed guide to wholesome, economical, and delicious cooking with nearly 500 choice and tested recipes.” The authors assert that their extensive manual was designed specifically for middle-class housewives, versus others written for women with money and servants. It includes housekeeping information and dishes for every occasion that the practical-minded housewife might need. The New Housekeeper’s Manual was well received and had over 25 printings in 25 years.  This edition of The New Housekeeper’s Manual was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes

At the forefront are farmhouse cheesemakers whose world is explored here for the first time in a comprehensive guide to the producers and the cheeses they make. Each cheese is described in detail, its characteristics such as colour, texture, aroma and flavour. Cheese facts are presented with easy-to-read icons indicating the species/breed of animal milked, whether the milk is raw or pasteurised, if traditional or vegetarian rennet is used, and whether the cheese is produced under organic principles. Supporting information includes the history of cheesemaking in Ireland, how cheese is made and best conserved, and resources for cheese lovers. Derry Clarke, Ross Lewis, Catherine Fulvio, Clodagh McKenna, Denis Cotter, Darina Allen, Rachel Allen and others contribute Irish farmhouse cheese recipes. “A testament to the taste of place in all the best ways possible . . . hits all the perfect notes for anyone interested in regional cuisines” (Tracey Ryder, cofounder of Edible Communities, Inc.).  New Prairie Kitchen profiles twenty-five of the most exciting and groundbreaking chefs, farmers, and producers of artisanal goods from Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Their personal stories are interspersed with more than fifty chef-contributed recipes that range from refreshingly simple to exquisitely gourmet. Organized by season, New Prairie Kitchen will transport readers to a revitalized Midwestern heartland where traditional favorites interweave with inspiring new flavors and techniques.   Author Summer Miller introduces readers to the phenomenal talent emerging from America’s breadbasket: farms that grow asparagus thick as your thumb and tender as a strawberry; dairies that produce fresh, natural milks and cheeses; and nationally recognized restaurants that make these mouthwatering ingredients into edible art. Pioneering chefs across the prairie have taken an old-meets-new approach to their cuisine, sourcing traditional staples from local sustainable farms, and incorporating them into recipes in new and thrilling ways.     Beautiful full-color photography and terrific storytelling will lead readers through a wonderful diversity of cooking styles and recipes sure to appeal to any palate. New Prairie Kitchen will reveal a fresh take on farm-to-table cooking and inspire Americans from coast to coast to try everything the prairie has to offer.   “A passionate . . . plea for the Plains states’ inclusion in the American culinary lexicon, with great recipes to boot.” —Epicurious   “The recipes and producers here are indeed treasures, and the book is the treasure map.” —Omaha Magazine
