Autobiography of a Pocket-Handkerchief - A Satire of New York Fashion

Summary

A handkerchief narrates its own life — from the flax field in Picardy, through a Paris workroom where a girl embroiders it into a fortune, to New York, where it is bought by people who need to be seen with it. Cooper was thrown out of Yale for a prank with gunpowder and wrote his first novel on a bet with his wife; this 1843 satire on American snobbery is the strangest thing in his shelf, and it is very sharp about money. Sixty plates by painters including Daumier and Caillebotte follow the same passage from field to parlor, from harvest and meadow to theater and carriage, the rural labor and city leisure that turn a scrap of linen into a social weapon.

From Chickamauga to Cheyenne, New York to New Orleans, Seattle to Scotland—no matter where these two wandering jesters go, there's something to roast, something to toast, and something to learn about what ties us together as humans. Even the most outrageous of us.
In this book you'll find:Loads of eccentric things folks say.Seriously well-informed tips on exactly where to eat and what to order in each city.Anecdotes from Corey about everything from "German Mardi Gras" in Helen, Georgia, to eatin' over-priced rabbit in Napa, California. And as many off-the-beaten-path jokes as could be packed in!

Perfect for anyone who:Likes to travel.Loathes to travel.Any Southerner who's both a little proud and a little ashamed of the South (that's all the sane ones).Any Northerner, Midwesterner, or West Coaster who wants to know what two self-proclaimed rednecks have to say about their own hometown.Anyone from the UK who thinks us Yanks are the craziest folks on God's green earth (cause this book will likely confirm that stereotype, yup).

'Another warm and witty read perfect to curl up on the sofa and immerse yourself in. I love the Macintosh style!' Reader review ★★★★★
Lily Holmes is ready for a fresh start. And there’s no better place to begin again than the idyllic seaside town of Marram Bay.
All Lily wants to do is focus on making her new deli a success and ensuring her son’s happiness. Not the postcard creeping out of her handbag, and definitely not finding a new man in her life!
But this isn’t going to be as easy as she first thought. The town is in uproar about the city girl who’s dared to join them and she’s fighting a battle at every turn.
Perhaps with a little help from the gorgeous cider farmer next door, she may be able to win them over, but her past secrets threaten to ruin everything …Praise for Portia MacIntosh

I wrote this before I knew I had ADHD

"This book is simply exquisite, there are no other words for it."
    I have a secret.
    I am mad.
Not crazy or bonkers or daft. Just mad. You wouldn't know it to look at me or talk to me or even be in a loving long-term relationship with me, but I can assure you, I have the darkness...
Keeping a secret of her pain and self-harming is taking its toll on Lauren. She finally feels like she might be brave enough to confide in her mother, who reveals a devastating secret of her own. Pushing her own problems deep back inside, Lauren braces herself for battle…
"I was overwhelmed by this book. It's raw, and honest and gut wrenching. And at the same time, it's funny, full of pathos and so cleverly, bravely, exquisitely written. The style is so fresh, so seamless, I can't image the work that went into turning this so personal story into such a perfect work of fiction, of entertainment. Little snatches of life, little moments crafted out of pain and experience and truth into something cinematic, gripping. I loved it, even while being upset by it, being overawed by the courage and talent of the author. I finished it in a flash, and had to order it for a friend of mine far away." Jo - Reader review
"Beautifully, carefully, seamlessly written in a unique style it made me laugh and cry and pulled out a hundred emotions in-between. If you enjoy a book that's real and raw and honest then try this, it's a brave subject matter, the plot is character led and will stay with me for years to come." Reader review
"An accomplished and impeccably penned narrative through difficult and challenging human territory. By the time you have read this novel you will emerge more human than when you went in. And this is the litmus test of all literature." Christopher Rush

Millie is old enough to know better. Just don’t tell her that.
At forty-nine, Millie's life is in freefall. Everyone around her seems to have it all figured out—meanwhile, she’s stuck in a job she hates and back living with her mum. Avoiding reality is practically a full-time job.
With the big 5-0 looming, Millie does what any floundering misfit would do: she panics. And tells a ridiculous lie.
But as her little white whopper snowballs into a full-blown situation, Millie’s forced to face some uncomfortable truths. If this isn’t a breakdown — could she finally be having a breakthrough?
Featuring a brilliantly chaotic heroine, sharp and snappy humour, and a big beating heart at its centre, Woman Behaving Badly is the perfect read for fans of Marian Keyes and Ruth Jones— a joyful, life-affirming reminder that it is never, ever too late to get your act together. Probably.
