Summary

The Lost Stradivarius (1895), by J. Meade Falkner, is a short novel of ghosts and the evil that can be invested in an object, in this case an extremely fine Stradivarius violin. After finding the violin of the title in a hidden compartment in his college rooms, the protagonist, a wealthy young heir, becomes increasingly secretive as well as obsessed by a particular piece of music, which seems to have the power to call up the ghost of the violin's previous owner. Roaming from England to Italy, the story involves family love, lordly depravity, and the tragedy of obsession, all conveyed in a "high" serious tone not uncommon in late Victorian literature.
Preceding M.R. James's ghost stories by several years, it has been called the novel James might have written, had he written novels.
In August 2008 a Joanna David reading of the novel was broadcast on BBC Radio 7.

John Meade Falkner (8 May 1858 – 22 July 1932) was an English novelist and poet, best known for his 1898 novel, Moonfleet.
An extremely successful businessman as well, he became chairman of the arms manufacturer Armstrong Whitworth during World War I.

"the hand was writhing in agonized contortions, squirming and wriggling upon the nail like a worm upon a hook. 'We'll keep it there until it dies,' he said. 'May I burn in hell, if I ever open the door of that safe again.' The Beast With Five Fingers, by W. F. Harvey, published in 1928, is a fantastically creepy horror story by an often underappreciated old master of the genre. Eustace, an affluent English bachelor, receives a legacy from his uncle Adrian (who was blind). The legacy consists of a large library and a box, with air holes in it. Eustace imagines the box contains a small animal. It's definitely alive and it's definitely not benign. Animal? Not really...

"Rat Under Glass" is a short story that straddles the dark crime and extreme horror genres. It is primarily about Neo, a rat catcher who crosses the mob after his partner is killed by The Lobotomizer. Neo bungles the mob's bid for another sanitation contract by electrifying the runoff grids of New York. Lots of people fry, and the mob sees fit to dispense extreme punishment. Most of the story is about how Neo deals with that punishment, making use of his perseverance, tenacity, and off-the-wall thinking. The punishment involves a camcorder in a cave, recording Neo getting eaten alive by rats in a plexiglass cage. Oh, and he's stuck in there with the guy who killed his partner.
