Sinossi

In "Brief Diversions: Being Tales, Travesties and Epigrams," J. B. Priestley showcases his adeptness in weaving together a collection of witty narratives that span a range of themes—from the absurd to the profound. Priestley employs a distinctive literary style marked by sharp observations and a playful yet thought-provoking tone. The book is a reflection of the interwar period, capturing the social and political undercurrents of early 20th-century Britain, while also drawing on elements of surrealism and satire to critique contemporary society and culture. J. B. Priestley, an influential British novelist, playwright, and essayist, drew upon his diverse experiences—ranging from his working-class roots in Yorkshire to his service in World War I—to inform his rich storytelling. His interest in the complexities of human nature and society often permeates his work, and "Brief Diversions" stands as a testament to his belief in the power of narrative to reveal deeper truths. Priestley's intellectual curiosity and engagement with philosophical questions lend this collection a unique depth that invites careful reflection. This book is highly recommended for readers who appreciate sharp wit and the exploration of social commentary through the lens of fiction. Whether you are a longtime admirer of Priestley's work or new to his writing, "Brief Diversions" offers a compelling journey through his inventive mind and literary prowess, making it an essential addition to the collections of lovers of modern literature.

In this funny Regency romance series, the Shackleford sisters descend on a Regency society that doesn’t know what’s hit it…
Prudence Shackleford had not expected to be a spinster at three and twenty, but unfortunately, as she’d quickly discovered, very few men were prepared to tolerate either her ghoulish sense of humour, or her macabre taste in literature. And those were the ones she’d got as far as holding a conversation with.

When invited to London by the Duke and Duchess of Blackmore to witness the Coronation of King George IV, she was equal parts horrified and intrigued. Especially after a chance meeting with a Bow Street Runner on the trail of conspirators it was feared were planning to murder the King.

Jamie Fitzroy had been a Bow Street Runner for five years. In that time he’d risen swiftly up the ranks, gaining a reputation for both ruthlessness and guile. Such were his successes in ridding London's streets of thieves and murderers, his name had become almost legendary.

But in the wake of the Cato Street Conspiracy, he was now on the trail of a gang intending to assassinate the King during his own Coronation. And with less than two weeks to go, and a London packed to bursting, the stakes had never been higher.

The last thing he had time for was a russet haired chit who was too ripe and ready by half – even if she did haunt his dreams every night…

Perfect for fans of Regency Romances with wit and humour and a little bit of steam...

Stan, an Elton John tribute act, has always believed his music career was destined for greatness. But with every missed opportunity and closed door, frustration mounts. One night, after a few too many drinks, Stan stumbles upon a startling theory: his lack of success isn’t bad luck—it’s because Sir Elton John himself is standing in his way. Desperate to change his fate, Stan concocts a reckless plan to take down the music legend and reclaim his own future.
Enlisting his friends George and Ziggy, Stan sets out on a mission that quickly spirals beyond anything they imagined. What starts as a wild, half-baked scheme soon draws them into dangerous territory, where murky figures from the underworld take an unexpected interest in their plan. Blackmail and threats escalate, leaving the trio no choice but to press on, even as the absurdity of their quest becomes undeniable.
As word of their intentions spreads, they find themselves caught between law enforcement, obsessive fans, and their own growing doubts. With every step, the line between fantasy and reality blurs—are they really chasing fame, or have they become pawns in a game they don’t understand?
Killing Elton John is a darkly comic and twisted tale of ambition, delusion, and the lengths we go to rewrite our own stories. Will Stan and his friends succeed in their impossible mission, or are they destined to unravel before they even reach the legend they seek to slay?

On an alien moon a showdown is unfolding between a giant space slug that's heading towards a planet to destroy it, and a military group readying to defend their home world. A small fluffy dog runs through the night intent on regaining its previous life, and a pizza delivery man leaves his shift hoping to attend a university party. All of these events connect as sinister forces maneuver themselves in the background waiting to strike.
You should buy this audiobook. It's narrated by a real person. He's very good.
    It's a comedy.
However, to help you in your retail purchasing decisions, might I offer you these possibilities:
    1) You love it. Thus, you have a wonderful day, and this audiobook was well worth the purchase.
    2) You hate it. Then you gift it to your frenemy, and it was once more worth the cost, as you finally one-up your nemesis.
    3) You neither love it nor hate it, so you print the cover, encase it in resin and convert it into a coffee table as a discussion piece about the meaning of knowledge and the impermanence of the digital age, and again the audiobook has earned its keep.
    4) Should you be lacking a printer, and you find that it falls under option 3 above, might I suggest that you use it to level out that wonky table in your memory palace instead. Why is that table in your memory palace wonky? I don't know, it's your memory palace. You should probably do something about that, and this audiobook can help.
I wish you well on your future purchase.
As one final incentive, here is a message for you from your future self that was sent back in time.
"Wow, I'm sure glad I purchased that audiobook. Maybe I should buy three more and give them out as inspiration/warnings for future authors!" please remove words as appropriate - your future self.
And if that doesn't prove time travel, I don't know what will.
Also, if you buy several copies you are winning at the game of life. Good for you!

    Y2K - How the 2000s Became...

“Nothing I’ve read has cut to the heart of the ’00s like Y2K.” — Bustle
Perfect for fans of Jia Tolentino and Chuck Klosterman, Y2K is a delightfully nostalgic and bitingly told exploration about how the early 2000s forever changed us and the world we live in.
THE EARLY 2000s conjures images of inflatable furniture, flip phones, and low-rise jeans. It was a new millennium and the future looked bright, promising prosperity for all. The internet had arrived, and technology was shiny and fun. For many, it felt like the end of history: no more wars, racism, or sexism. But then history kept happening. Twenty-five years after the ball dropped on December 31st, 1999, we are still living in the shadows of the Y2K Era.
In Y2K, one of our most brilliant young critics Colette Shade offers a darkly funny meditation on everything from the pop culture to the political economy of the period. By close reading Y2K artifacts like the Hummer H2, Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” body glitter, AOL chatrooms, Total Request Live, and early internet porn, Shade produces an affectionate yet searing critique of a decade that started with a boom and ended with a crash.
In one essay Colette unpacks how hearing Ludacris’s hit song “What’s Your Fantasy” shaped a generation’s sexual awakening; in another she interrogates how her eating disorder developed as rail-thin models from the collapsed USSR flooded the pages of Vogue; in another she reveals how the McMansion became an ominous symbol of the housing collapse.
Perfect for fans of Jia Tolentino and Chuck Klosterman, Y2K is the first book to fully reckon with the mixed legacy of the Y2K Era—a perfectly timed collection that holds a startling mirror to our past, present, and future.
