Summary

The seventeenth century Englishman Izaak Walton is the celebrated author of ‘The Compleat Angler’, a pastoral discourse on the joys and stratagems of fishing that has become one of the most frequently reprinted books of English literature. The unpretentious treatise, of which Walton declined to claim authorship on its first appearance, became a household book from the eighteenth century. Though many of its devotees have been fishermen, Walton’s engaging style in dialogue and description, his enthusiasm for innocent outdoor recreation and his love for the past have elevated ‘The Compleat Angler’ out of the category of handbooks into a unique status. Walton also wrote a number of short biographies, later collected under the title of ‘Walton's Lives’, which are now considered to be seminal examples of biographical literature. This comprehensive eBook presents Walton’s complete works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and bonus material. (Version 1)

The former NFL quarterback examines the roots of masculinity gone awry and how it promotes violence against women.

In You Throw Like a Girl, former Syracuse University quarterback and NFL veteran Don McPherson examines how the narrow definition of masculinity adversely impacts women and creates many “blind spots” that hinder the healthy development of men. Dissecting the strict set of beliefs and behaviors that underpin our understanding of masculinity, he contends that we don’t raise boys to be men, we raise them not to be women.

Using examples from his own life, including his storied football career, McPherson passionately argues that viewing violence against women as a “women’s issue” not just ignores men’s culpability but conflates the toxicity of men’s violence with being male. In You Throw Like a Girl, McPherson leads us beyond the blind spots and toward solutions, analyzing how we can engage men in a sustained dialogue, with a new set of terms that are aspirational and more accurately representative of the emotional wholeness of men.

Now celebrating its fortieth anniversary, Roy Blount Jr.’s classic account of the 1973 Pittsburgh Steelers—a team on the cusp of once-in-a-generation greatness  The Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s are mentioned in any conversation about the greatest dynasties in NFL history. A year before Pittsburgh’s first Super Bowl victory launched a decade of domination, Roy Blount Jr. spent a season traveling with the team, recording the ups and downs, both large and small, in the lives of men who would soon reach the pinnacle of success in their sport. He covers everything from the birth of the “Steel Curtain” defense to the unique connection the people of Pittsburgh had with their hard-nosed team. Interspersed with vivid depictions of players like Terry Bradshaw, “Mean” Joe Greene, and Ernie “Fats” Holmes, as well as the team owners, the Rooney clan, About Three Bricks Shy of a Load harks back to a bygone era when offensive linemen could weigh about the same as the backs they blocked for, when the highest-paying team’s highest-paid player—Bradshaw—made $400,000, and when one team was able to win four Super Bowls in six years—a feat that remains unrivaled today. Uproariously funny and brilliantly written, About Three Bricks Shy of a Load was named one of the Top 100 Sports Books of All Time by Sports Illustrated.
