Bestselling author Deborah E. Harkness explores the streets, shops, back alleys, and gardens of Elizabethan London, where a boisterous and diverse group of men and women shared a keen interest in the study of nature. These assorted merchants, gardeners, barber-surgeons, midwives, instrument makers, mathematics teachers, engineers, alchemists, and other experimenters, she contends, formed a patchwork scientific community whose practices set the stage for the Scientific Revolution. It was their collaborative, yet often contentious, ethos that helped to develop the ideals of modern scientific research. The Jewel House examines six particularly fascinating episodes of scientific inquiry and dispute in sixteenth-century London, bringing to life the individuals involved and the challenges they faced. These men and women experimented and invented, argued and competed, waged wars in the press, and struggled to understand the complexities of the natural world. Together, their stories illuminate the blind alleys and surprising twists and turns taken as medieval philosophy gave way to the empirical, experimental culture that became a hallmark of the Scientific Revolution.

An observation is only a brief snapshot of your teaching. It could turn out to be like a flattering studio portrait or like that dire passport photo from one of those booths! Either way it is just a snapshot. The aim of this book is not simply to make that brief observation look outstanding but for it to truly reflect your everyday outstanding teaching. The inspection framework aims to discover the 'typical' quality of the teaching that is delivered every day of the year, not just during inspection. The best way you can be 'outstanding' is to develop a flexible, multifaceted approach that draws on the very best ideas and which continually adapts and responds to individual learners' needs. Here, Jackie Beere shows you how as she shares her expertise and experience in a practical, down-to-earth way; it is as much about world-class quality in teaching and learning as it is about surviving an inspection. The advice is easy to apply - no matter what subject you teach or what sort of teacher you are. Many different teachers have successfully implemented the strategies offered here and adapted them to suit their different styles, personalities and classes. A history and guide to historic British airfields where American bombers were prepared to take off at a moment’s notice—includes photos.

As part of the AHT series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area—in this case Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Second Air Division’s first bombing mission was flown on November 7, 1942; the last on April 25, 1945. A total of 95, 948 sorties were flown in 493 operational missions by the division’s B-24s, dropping 199,883 tons of bombs. Targets attacked ranged from Norway in the north, as far east as Poland and Romania, while several Mediterranean countries were reached from temporary bases in North Africa.

Six 2nd Air Division groups received special presidential citations for outstanding actions and five airmen received the Medal of Honor (highest US award for bravery), four posthumously. In combat the 2nd Air Division gunners claimed 1,079 enemy fighters destroyed against losses of 1,458 B-24s missing in action and many others lost in accidents.

This book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favourite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would go.

A retired US Army lieutenant colonel and former congressman shows how black America can improve itself through conservative values. Something has happened to the black community. Over the past decades, black America stopped believing that “we shall overcome.” Instead, they began accepting handouts from the government, turning away from the values of family, selfless military service, and business ownership that have been pillars of black America from the beginning. Progressive socialism has bound them in what amounts to economic enslavement. In his third book, Lt. Col. Allen B. West (Ret.) takes readers back through the political history of the black community, highlighting the history of public service, self-reliance, ingenuity, strong families, and religious involvement that pulled black Americans through the horrors of slavery, Reconstruction, and decades of Jim Crow laws. These are the values that enabled them to improve their lives—to overcome. We Can Overcome: An American Black Conservative Manifesto urges black America to return to the conservative principles that once had entire neighborhoods building wealth and thriving on Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It’s time black Americans remember the strength they possess. In this age of escalating black-on-black violence and increasing government dependency, the sons and daughters of Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King Jr. must stand up. We are not victims. We are victors. We can overcome.
