Summary

On December 18, 2019, the House of Representatives impeached Donald Trump along party lines. President Trump was charge for abusing the power of the presidency by withholding military aid as a means of pressuring the newly elected president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to perform two favors: to pursue investigations of Joe Biden and his son Hunter, and to investigate a conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, was behind interference in the 2016 presidential election. The House of Representatives conducted an investigation and entire procedure which involved hearings and pleading of evidences. This book provides all key reports, transcripts and evidences presented against the president as well as in his favor. A number of documents presented make this book a necessary read for anyone interested in America's biggest political scandal of 21st century.

Fierce independence and a ‘leave me alone’ attitude define the modern Libertarian and party. This does not make for good politics where coordination and national momentum is crucial.
This book outlines a practical libertarianism that can coexist with the two other national parties. We can find a common, central philosophy that will capture the drive of an election-winning majority of ‘We the People’.

The Last Empire is a collection of provocative, witty, and eloquent essays by Gore Vidal about all things USA. In more than two dozen essays, Vidal brings his keen intellect, experience, and razor-edged wit to bear on an astonishing range of subjects, offering incisive observations about terrorism, civil liberties, the CIA, Al Gore, and the Clintons—interwoven with a rich tapestry of personal anecdote, critical insight, and historical detail. Erudite, forever curious, argumentative, irascible, and often very funny, Gore writes that the United States is, “a unique society in which we have free enterprise for the poor and socialism for the rich.” The Last Empire is a sweeping coda to the still-existing conflicted vision of the American dream—leaving no need to imagine what trenchant barbs Vidal would have uttered concerning the state and level of discourse of American society right now.

What is the impact of surveillance capitalism on our right to free speech? The Internet once promised to be a place of extraordinary freedom beyond the control of money or politics, but today corporations and platforms exercise more control over our ability to access information and share knowledge to a greater extent than any state. From the online calls to arms in the thick of the Arab Spring to the contemporary front line of misinformation, Jillian York charts the war over our digital rights. In Silicon Values, leading campaigner Jillian York looks at how our rights have become increasingly undermined by the major corporations' desire to harvest our personal data and turn it into profit. She also looks at how governments have used the same technology to monitor citizens and threatened our ability to communicate. As a result our daily lives, and private thoughts, are being policed in an unprecedented manner. Who decides the difference between political debate and hate speech? How does this impact on our identity, our ability to create communities and to protest? Who regulates the censors? In response to this threat to our democracy, York proposes a user-powered movement against the platforms that demands change and a new form of ownership over our own data.

In his inimitable style, Keillor draws on a lifetime of experience amongst the hardworking, God-fearing people of the Midwest and pays homage to the common code of civic necessities that arose from the left: Protect the social compact. Defend the powerless. Maintain government as a necessary force for good. As Keillor tells it, these are articles of faith that are being attacked by hard-ass Republican tax cutters who believe that human misery is a Dickensian fiction. In a blend of nostalgic reminiscence, humorous meditation, and articulate ire, Keillor asserts the value of his boyhood—the values of Lake Wobegon—that do not square with the ugly narcissistic agenda at work in the country today.

A “fascinating” look at what students in Russia, France, Iran, and other nations are taught about America (The New York Times Book Review).   This “timely and important” book (History News Network) gives us a glimpse into classrooms across the globe, where opinions about the United States are first formed.  History Lessons includes selections from textbooks and teaching materials used in Russia, France, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Canada, and others, covering such events as the American Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Korean War—providing some alternative viewpoints on the history of the United States from the time of the Viking explorers to the post-Cold War era.   By juxtaposing starkly contrasting versions of the historical events we take for granted, History Lessons affords us a sometimes hilarious, often sobering look at what the world thinks about America’s past.   “A brilliant idea.” —Foreign Affairs
