It is a pioneering tale of social realism (the story predates Soviet socialist realism), and is a lament of lost ideals. Twenty-six men slave away in a cellar, making kringles, looked down on by all around them, including the bread bakers. Their only joy in their lives is the 16-year-old Tanya, who visits them every morning to collect kringles.A new bread baker, a soldier, visits the kringle makers. He befriends them, and boasts of his success with women. The kringle bakers bet him that he will not be able to seduce their beloved Tanya...and watch in an agony of tension as he takes on the bet.

  Originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel's fortnightly periodical, the Magasin d'éducation et de récréation and wildly acclaimed on it's release, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea is perhaps Jules Verne most well known title. 
  The world is abuzz with tales of a giant mysterious marine animal, roaming the waterways of the worlds, a menace to shipping. The American Government sends out the Frigate "Abraham Lincoln" to hunt the beast. Aboard is the scientist Professor Arronax, his manservant Conceil and the famed Canadian Whaler; Ned Land. 
  However these three soon discover that far from being a gigantic Narwhale, the object is in fact a fabulous underwater vessel, built and captained by the mysterious Captain Nemo. As he takes the three on a marvellous underwater tour of the world, will they ever be able to escape back to civilisation?

  The Battle of Life: A Love Story is a novella by Charles Dickens, 1st published in 1846. It's the 4th of his five "Christmas Books", coming after The Cricket on the Hearth, followed by The Haunted Man & the Ghost's Bargain. The setting is an English village that stands on the site of a historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life, hence the title. Battle is the only one of the five Christmas Books that has no supernatural or explicitly religious elements. (One scene takes place at Christmas time, but it isn't the final scene.) The story bears some resemblance to The Cricket on the Hearth in two aspects: it has a non-urban setting & it's resolved with a romantic twist. It's even less of a social novel than is Cricket. As is typical with Dickens, the ending is a happy one. It's one of Dickens' lesser-known works & has never attained any high level of popularity, a trait it shares among the Christmas Books with The Haunted Man.
