Summary

ABOUT THE BOOK

You don’t need me to tell you the Bible is kind of a big deal.

Whether you’re a church-going-believer type or a die-hard skeptic, chances are you know that the Bible is one of the most influential books ever written. You’ve heard the oft-quoted statistic that the Bible is the number one bestselling book of all time. In fact, you’ve heard a lot about the Bible. And whether you’re aware of it or not, most of what you’ve heard is wrong.

I’m here to remedy that.

It amazes me how little most people know about such an important book. For a book everybody has an opinion about, surprisingly few have actually read it. And even fewer have taken the time to study it.

So, well done. You’re already way ahead of the curve.

If you’re interested in a line-by-line intimate understanding of the book in its entirety, you’ve come to the wrong place. In fact, if you’re interested in that kind of familiarity, I suggest you stop reading immediately and look into getting your PhD. If you are here for context, interesting facts, and a basic introduction to biblical scholarship, read on.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Hilary is a Ravenclaw, a science fiction enthusiast, and a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, where she learned a lot about the Bible but very little about being a grown-up. It took her a mere six months of working in a very fancy office with a very large window to discover that the corporate world was not her cup of tea. She now makes her living as a tutor specializing in time management, executive functioning skills, and organizational techniques. She spends most of her free time knitting and writing about the theological underpinnings of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Final Fantasy VII, and the films of David Lynch. She plans on returning to the ivory womb of the academy in the fall of 2013, where she will study the relationship between religion and technology in the contemporary world.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

The basic structure of the Bible can be broken up into four levels of differentiation. On the first level, we have the Hebrew Testament, the Christian Testament, and the Apocrypha, which doesn’t apply to the KJV. On the second level, the Bible is broken up into classes of literature, which have to do with the literary style of the text. The categories that belong to this level are The Pentatuach, Histories, Prophets, Apocalyptic Literature, Wisdom Literature, Gospels, and Epistles.

The next three levels are more quantitative than the first two. Beyond the different classifications of literature we have books, chapters, and verses. These classifications allow us to reference specific portions of the text in a way that allows other scholars to understand to what we are discussing. You can think of them like page numbers, only much more precise. While the Bible is very plot-driven, it doesn’t really have an over-arching plot. This is because rather than being one book, it is really a collection of books. An anthology, so to speak. Each book of the Bible has its own plot with its own characters and its own theological meaning. And while each individual book is important and rich and interesting in its own right, we don’t have nearly enough space here to go into the plot of every one. What’s more, different scholars have different ideas about which books, stories and side-plots are most important to an overall understanding of the meaning of the Bible as a whole. So rather than try to cover everything (and in doing so rob you of any real detailed understanding of anything), I've selected some of the stories that I think you’re most likely to already be familiar with plot-wise, as well as some stories that are commonly misunderstood. Lets begin with the beginning: the creation of the world.

A top genealogist “shows how genetics helps and how it roots each of us in this magnificent story of Life on Earth in the most meaningful way imaginable.”—Reunite Magazine   “What a fine long pedigree you have given the human race.”—Charles Darwin to Charles Lyell, 1863   How distantly are we related to dinosaurs? How much of your DNA came from Neanderthals? How are the builders of Stonehenge connected to great-grandpa?   According to science, life first appeared on Earth about 3,500 million years ago. Every living thing is descended from that first spark, including all of us. But if we trace a direct line down from those original life forms to ourselves, what do we find? What is the full story of our family tree over the past 3,500 million years, and how are we able to trace ourselves so far back?   From single-celled organisms to sea-dwelling vertebrates; amphibians to reptiles; tiny mammals to primitive man; the first Homo sapiens to the cave painters of Ice Age Europe and the first farmers down to the Norman Conquest, this book charts not only the extraordinary story of our ancient ancestors but also our 40,000-year-long quest to discover our roots, from ancient origin myths of world-shaping mammoths and great floods down to the scientific discovery of our descent from the Genetic Adam and the Mitochondrial Eve.   “Having read it I’m still slightly shell-shocked by the range of topics that he covers, from the origins of the universe and life on Earth to the present-day DNA analysis that aims to answer some of our questions about our past. And everything in between!”—LostCousins

    Code IT Primary Programming Series
Basic computer coding is now among the most important skills a child can have for their future. There are many programming languages designed specifically for children to begin their studies, but the Scratch programming language, already recognised in schools around the world, is widely considered as the ideal place to begin programming in early education.
The highly successful Code-It series is a comprehensive guide to teaching Scratch to children in a classroom setting. It is designed for the UK-based KS2 curriculum but can easily be used to supplement other programming courses for children between the ages of 7 and 11.
There are four pupil workbooks designed to work in conjunction with the Code-It teacher handbook. They provide structure and resources for the children, including optional homework activities to extend to learning outside the classroom.
Workbook 2 explains how to think, program and debug exciting programming projects such as Maths Quiz, Music Algorithm to Music Code, Slug Trail Game, Selection Investigation and Teach Your Computer To Do Maths . It also outlines how to use analytical computational thinking skills for algorithm design, algorithm evaluation, decomposition and generalisation; extend resilience and problem solving through the computational doing skills of converting algorithm into code and debugging; and consolidate sequence and repetition in programming whilst introducing selection and variable use.

"My name is Wendell Potter, and for twenty years I worked as a senior executive at health insurance companies. I saw how they confuse their customers and dump the sick-all so they can satisfy their Wall Street investors." -Senate testimony, June 24, 2009Wendell Potter is the insurance industry's worst nightmare. In June 2009, Wendell Potter made national headlines with his scorching testimony before the Senate panel on health care reform. This former senior vice president of CIGNA explained how health insurers make promises they have no intention of keeping, how they flout regulations designed to protect consumers, and how they skew political debate with multibillion-dollar public relations campaigns designed to spread disinformation.Potter had walked away from a six-figure salary and two decades as an insurance executive because he could no longer abide the routine practices of an industry where the needs of sick and suffering Americans take a backseat to the bottom line. The last straw: when he visited a rural health clinic and saw hundreds of people standing in line in the rain to receive treatment in stalls built for livestock. In Deadly Spin, Potter takes listeners behind the scenes to show how a huge chunk of our absurd health care spending actually bankrolls a propaganda campaign and lobbying effort focused on protecting one thing: profits. Whatever the fate of the current health care legislation, it makes no attempt to change that fundamental problem. Potter shows how relentless PR assaults play an insidious role in our political process anywhere that corporate profits are at stake-from climate change to defense policy. Deadly Spin tells us why-and how-we must fight back.

The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers is the most comprehensive set of its kind in the history of true crime publishing. Written and compiled by Susan Hall, the four-volume set has more than 1600 entries of male and female serial killers from around the world.

The series continues with Volume Two, E-L. The entries include El Loco Luis Alfredo Garavito, Happy Face Killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, Interstate Killer Larry Eyler, Godfather of Matamoros Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo, and Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo. You will find these killers and approximately 350 others in this second book in the series of The World Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.
