  Susan Keating Glaspell (1876 - 1948) was a novelist, playwright, journalist and actress. The Verge reflects Glaspell's observation of the way in which Victorian society left some women feeling trapped in roles for which they were unsuited.  
  The story is about Claire, a woman who lives her life on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Trying to create a new type of plant, Claire spends most of her time in the greenhouse.  
  One winter, with a house full of guests, she diverts the heat to the greenhouse. She tries to leave her family and friends outside, in the cold, and their attempts to bring her back to the real world drive her over the edge into utter insanity. The language of The Verge is unusual. The characters sometimes speak in poetic fragments rather than everyday speech.  
  What’s more, symbolism features heavily in the play. Of course, it all ends in death and destruction, with Claire humming "Nearer My God, to Thee” and with a smoking gun in her hand and a dead man at her feet.

Lovecraft in 1920, and first published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales #24 in September 1925.The story is narrated as a "found manuscript" penned by Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein, a lieutenant-commander in the Imperial German Navy during the days of World War I. Altberg begins by declaring that he has decided to document the events leading up to his untimely end in order to "set certain facts" before the public, aware that he will not survive to do so himself.

  Three men, Mihailo the porter, Nikandr the fish merchant, and Stepan the coachman, sit around a table in the coach-house playing a game of "kings" with Stepan's eight-year old grandson, Alyoshka. While each card player competitively tries to win the coveted position of "king" in the game, a more serious atmosphere casts a sad shadow over the estate in which the coach-house is situated. The man of the house, for whom the porter and coachman work, has attempted suicide, and he lies in the estate house struggling somewhere between life and death. Although the card game had been light-hearted, the exit of the doctors, for whom the porter must open the door, turns the card players' conversation to the religious implications of suicide, which Nikandr relates in a similar experience he had. The ghostly ramifications in Nikandr's story frighten young Alyoshka, whose fright becomes worse when the men learn the fate of their boss.
