Twelfth Night, first performed around 1600, probably at the court of Queen Elizabeth I, is the tale of separated brother and sister twins – Sebastian and Viola – and their love entanglements. It also offers the rich comic colours of Sir Toby Belch, Malvolio and Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Twelfth Night is part of Naxos AudioBooks’ exciting new series of complete dramatisations of the works of Shakespeare, in conjunction with Cambridge University Press. It uses the New Cambridge Shakespeare text, as used by the Royal Shakespeare Company and educational institutions across the world.

"From an Observatory" by H. G. Wells is a short essay. H. G. Wells once different, humorous social satire and ironic. It will be some time yet before the rising of the moon. Looking down from the observatory one can see the pathways across the park dotted out in yellow lamps, each with a fringe of dim green; and further off, hot and bright, is the tracery of the illuminated streets, through which the people go to and fro. Save for an occasional stirring, or a passing voice speaking out of the dimness beneath me, the night is very still.

"When will this fearful slumber have an end?"
Titus Andronicus: The Complete Play in Five Acts
    A Shakespeare Recording Society Production
Titus Andronicus is William Shakespeare's harrowing vision of unending vengeance. After defeating the Goths in battle, Titus Andronicus returns to Rome only to be cold-bloodedly deceived and barbarically tormented by his enemies. This sets in motion an unceasing, seemingly unstoppable spiral of horrific violence and retribution. Vibrantly relevant to our times, Titus Andronicus is one of the most haunting of Shakespeare's plays and a powerful listening experience.

Science, better diet, advanced medicines are all part of a process that in the modern age keep most of us going to a ripe old age.

In previous times some diseases could only be slowed and not defeated. There toil of relentless attack on our physical forms brought misery and decay.

Add to this that within our number some will self-destruct, demons will pursue their inner thoughts and life will be too painful to bear. Some may shuffle off the mortal coil for no discernible reason, but life will end early, they will not take up their three-score year and ten.

In this collection of short stories some of our most popular and well-known authors are grouped together with an unfortunate tag: dead at 40.

These authors are not run-of-the-mill or ten a penny; many are literary leviathans who left enduring works of literature and sadly may have left us many more had they lived. We will never know.

Death for these authors was usually due to many health issues but primarily:—
Edgar Allan Poe — Several causes have been given but, in truth, it remains a mystery.
    Franz Kafka — Tuberculosis
Jack London — Dysentery, late-stage alcoholism, and uremia
Mary Dods (writing as David Lyndsey) — Liver disease
William Hope Hodgson — Killed at the Fourth Battle of Ypres in World War 1

    01 - Dead at 40 - An Introduction
02 - The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe
03 - In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka
04 - To Build a Fire by Jack London
05 - The Prediction by Mary Diana Dods writing as David Lyndsey

At the turn of the century, the short story form gained enormous popularity. As readers looked for diversion and entertainment, they found the attraction of a good tale irresistible-especially when the action was packed into a few pages instead of a hundred. Here are three timeless stories that will whisk you into exotic lands and unforgettable adventures. Against the frozen Alaskan landscape of To Build a Fire, a miner struggles to survive the splintering whiteness of sub-zero temperatures. Isle of Voices captures the Hawaii of old, where magic transports a young man to an island of powerful spirits. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi pits a mongoose against a cobra in the steamy beauty of an Indian garden. Recorded Books' award-winning narrators turn these three adventure stories into absorbing audio productions. Listen as their dramatic performances bring out the full richness of far-off lands and breathtaking challenges.
