Summary

The true story of an East German couple’s escape across the Iron Curtain and the international crisis that followed is "equal to any fictional thriller" (San Francisco Chronicle).

In August 1978, the Iron Curtain still hung heavily across Europe. To escape from oppressive East Berlin, an East German couple—Hans Detlef Alexander Tiede and Ingrid Ruske—hijacked a Polish airliner and diverted it to the American sector of West Berlin. Along with the couple, several passengers spontaneously defected to the West, and were welcomed by US officials. But within hours, Communist officials reminded the West of the anti-hijacking agreements in the Warsaw Pact, and thus the fugitives were arrested by the US State Department.

Thirty-four years after World War II, the United States built a court in the middle of West Berlin to try the hijacking couple. Former NJ district attorney, now a judge, Herbert J. Stern was appointed the "United States Judge for Berlin." What followed was a trial full of maneuvers and strategies that would put Perry Mason to shame, and answered the question: what is allowed to people seeking freedom?

Judgment in Berlin, also a major motion picture starring Martin Sheen and Sean Penn, is unsurpassed as a true-life suspense story, with its vivid accounts of daring escapes, close calls, diplomatic intrigue, and dramatic courtroom confrontations. The original edition won the Freedom Foundation Award, and this updated edition includes a new introduction from author and trial judge Herbert J. Stern.
Available since: 06/01/2021.

Those first four notes of its theme tune were instantly recognised and announced the start of perhaps the most famous police procedural in history. Set in Los Angeles and headed by police detective Sergeant Joe Friday the show has influenced all the many others that have followed in its illustrious footsteps.

It was based on real cases from police files. It described the methods used to track down the culprits and its technical language added to its authenticity. It was a ratings hit year in, year out.

Played and produced by Jack Webb its pared-down acting brought both the dull routine work and its acts of heroism and unselfishness into the living rooms of ordinary Americans, explaining a side of society that they only read about in the papers, heard in news bulletins or saw fabricated at the movies.

It’s time for the truth and for Sergeant Joe Friday to set the record straight.

The Remarkable Story of How One Man Defied the Odds

At 18, Paul Wood thought he had lost everything. He had committed an act he knew would send him to prison for many years. To a young man like Paul, it might as well have been for the rest of his life.
Plunged into a nightmarish world of extreme violence, solitary confinement, gang allegiances, drugs, vindictive wardens and regular stabbings, Paul spent the next 11 years confined in some of New Zealand's toughest jails.
Based on an account of his experiences he wrote while still inside, How to Escape from Prison chronicles Paul's road to redemption and a new life as a doctor of psychology, helping others strive to fulfil their potential and develop the resilience to flourish, even in adversity. This is a gripping read about a man who sank to the depths of despair, before scaling the heights of true freedom.
