Summary

Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12th, 1817 on Virginia Road in Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau studied at Harvard between 1833 and 1837 taking classes in rhetoric, classics, philosophy, mathematics, and science. On graduating the normal professions left him unmoved and, after a period teaching at his own school, a growing friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson moved his career onto that of writer and observer of nature. Thoreau was a philosopher of nature and how it affected the human condition. He was deeply influenced by Nature and especially the Walden woods. Eventually his published writings were to celebrate this area and his own philosophies. A noted Abolitionist Thoreau was a man to stand by his principles regardless of the minority view he might be holding. Tragically his life and career were short. In 1859, following a late-night excursion to count the rings of tree stumps during a rain storm, he fell ill with bronchitis. His health now fell into an irreversible decline with only short periods of remission. Thoreau spent his last years revising and editing his unpublished works. In the decades that followed he would be regarded as one of America’s greatest writers. Henry David Thoreau died on May 6th, 1862 at the tragically early age of just 44.

Dinosaurs—the word means “fearfully great reptile”—have been a source of fascination ever since their discovery in England early in the nineteenth century. Aside from birds, all dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 million years, yet, before then, they dominated Earth’s terrestrial habitats for about 160 million years, far longer than primates, or humans, have been around. Dinosaurs present the ultimate puzzle in forensic science, but we have learned a great deal about them, especially in the last fifty years. Our view of dinosaurs has changed radically, and the evolution and biology of dinosaurs has become a popular topic in college curriculums. This lecture series will explain how this changing view of dinosaurs developed, the evolutionary and ecological relationships among dinosaurs, what it might have been like to be present in the Mesozoic Era during the time of the dinosaurs, and the question of what ultimately brought about the total extinction of all of the non-bird dinosaurs and the end of the Cretaceous Period. Although extinct, dinosaurs have never been more a focus of science than they are today.

A 150-year history of the planning, construction, and development of all forms of mass transportation in Brooklyn, New York.

How We Got to Coney Island is the definitive history of mass transportation in Brooklyn. Covering 150 years of extraordinary growth, Cudahy tells the complete story of the trolleys, street cars, steamboats, and railways that helped create New York’s largest borough—and the remarkable system that grew to connect the world’s most famous seaside resort with Brooklyn, New York City across the river, and, ultimately, the rest of the world. Includes tables, charts, photographs, and maps.

Praise for How We Got to Coney Island

“This is an example of a familiar and decidedly old-fashioned genre of transport history. It is primarily an examination of the business politics of railway development and amalgamation in Brooklyn and adjoining districts since the mid-nineteenth century.” —The Journal of Transport History

Virtualization can take on many different forms: virtual memory, virtual servers, and virtualized storage. In each of these cases, we've been able to move beyond the underlying physical components that make up the system and through the use of clever virtualization techniques we've been able to get more out of the system. This is what we're going to explore in this book.
What You'll Find Inside:How Virtual Memory WorksWhy Bother With Virtualizing Servers?Server Virtualization In The Real WorldStorage Network Based Storage Virtualization
This book is divided into three sections. We are going to start out where all virtualization started: virtual memory. We'll then scale up and discuss how servers are virtualized. You can't have servers without storage, and so we'll then talk about how storage has been virtualized.
This is a rapidly evolving field. It our hope that by reading this book we can provide you with a firm foundation on which to understand what virtualization is and how it is being used to build networks that will be able to support today's applications. Using the foundation, we hope to be able to share with you the fundamental design approaches that are used to create a modern network and compare it to today's legacy networks.

From the acclaimed author of Tubes, a lively and surprising tour of the infrastructure behind the weather forecast, the people who built it, and what it reveals about our climate and our planet
The weather is the foundation of our daily lives. It’s a staple of small talk, the app on our smartphones, and often the first thing we check each morning. Yet behind these quotidian interactions is one of the most expansive machines human beings have ever constructed—a triumph of science, technology and global cooperation. But what is this ‘weather machine’ and who created it?
In The Weather Machine, Andrew Blum takes readers on a fascinating journey through an everyday miracle. In a quest to understand how the forecast works, he visits old weather stations and watches new satellites blast off. He follows the dogged efforts of scientists to create a supercomputer model of the atmosphere and traces the surprising history of the algorithms that power their work. He discovers that we have quietly entered a golden age of meteorology—our tools allow us to predict weather more accurately than ever, and yet we haven’t learned to trust them, nor can we guarantee the fragile international alliances that allow our modern weather machine to exist.
Written with the sharp wit and infectious curiosity Andrew Blum is known for, The Weather Machine pulls back the curtain on a universal part of our everyday lives, illuminating our relationships with technology, the planet, and the global community.

When I look around at the world, I see events that are strikingly obvious should not be happening. There are so many crazy people, ideas, concepts and events going on right now all over the world at a time when we have to be rational and objective so that we can take ourselves out of the rush to extinction that all of these crazy people are sending us.I concluded we must, therefore, be in the Bizarro Universe. I started to think about the events in my life that made it change from a perfectly 'Normal' life, to the one I am sharing with all of you and realized that somewhere along the line, probably when I lost the love of my life, through no fault of my own, that this was the turning point and it propelled me into this 'Bizarro Universe'. The more I thought about it, the more the book you are about to read came into focus for me. I had studied lots of Quantum Physics and Astronomy in my life, so I came up with this theory you are about to learn about here. The biggest piece of evidence, was when I realized that in a standard deck of playing cards there are no 'ONES'. They all start from the 'TWOs". Why is that? I pondered and then realized that it's just exactly what you would expect in this Bizarre Universe, the NON RATIONAL ONE, the one we are all forced into by bad events in our lives. This, of course, would mean that there is also another universe out there, where my twin and your twin are living in which everything is correct, happy and the planet is not threatened with Extinction because everyone is doing the right things to reduce their carbon footprint, reduce crime, reduce political unrest, social injustice, etc. This made me realize that there must be bridges between the 'Good Universe', the one we were all meant for, This book is a roadmap for how to get back to your correct life in the opposite universe.
