Beschreibung

In "How to Observe: Morals and Manners," Harriet Martineau, a pioneering sociologist and writer, presents a seminal guide to the practice of social observation, blending keen insight with meticulous analysis. Written during the early Victorian era, Martineau's work stands out for its pioneering approach to sociology, challenging existing notions of morality and social norms. Through a series of practical observations and case studies, she draws attention to the intricacies of human interactions and the implicit rules governing them, employing a clear and engaging literary style that merges narrative with analytical rigor. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was not only a formidable thinker but also a trailblazer in feminist and sociological literature. Having been raised in a progressive family, she was influenced by the intellectual currents of her time, including utilitarianism and the reform movements. Her passion for social justice and her own experiences as a deaf woman in a predominantly hearing society informed her perspectives on observation and ethics in public life, making her analyses deeply personal yet universally applicable. This book is an essential read for those interested in sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies. Martineau's innovative methods of observation remain relevant today, providing readers with powerful tools for understanding societal dynamics. Whether you're a student, a scholar, or a curious reader, "How to Observe: Morals and Manners" offers an enlightening journey into the art of guiding humane observation, revealing the complexities of everyday life.

THINK! YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.
'Thinking' is what we use to navigate life. It is the lens through which we see the world. Thoughts determine the quality of our lives; they determine its problems and its achievements, Work, success, relationships, happiness, everything depends on the way we think. Yet, have we ever investigated it? Why is our life the way it is? Have we searched for the answers in our own thoughts?
It makes sense to periodically review our thinking and thus re-adjust our navigation to achieve the results we seek. When our thoughts are set right, problems are solved and goals achieved.
How do we know what we know? How do we verify what we think? How do we improve our thinking? Epistemology or the theory of knowledge helps us.
This book analyses thoughts through an interesting amalgamation of such diverse subjects as Indian epistemology, Vedanta and mythology: and Western psychology, logic and literature.
Let us review our thoughts. Know how we think and how to improve that thinking. Think right to accelerate life.
After all, our life is the story we tell ourselves.

A powerful, entertaining and, at times, eviscerating commentary on the most controversial of original superfoods.

Milk. It's in our coffee, on our cereal. We see it in processed form – yoghurt, butter, cheese, skimmed and lactose free. It's there in almond form, or made from oats or soy, and is as lauded as the 'perfect' food or lambasted as not fit for human consumption and a toxic planet killer, depending on who you trust. Which type you drink, whether you were raised on breastmilk, what you think of it, is affected by culture, biology and fashion. How you view it is driven by your gender and your politics, as well as your geography.

The miracle liquid has suffered an image problem. It has been used to keep people poor, to keep women subjugated, and to build corporate and medical careers. It's been blamed for climate change, the breakdown of human health, and an enabler of the industrial revolution. From perfect food to pariah, milk's role in life has often been debased.

Milk celebrates the majesty of this noble liquid, and delves into the pretenders to its throne, from formula to Mylk. It looks at the transformation of what a milk-producer eats into one of the most nutrient dense foods available, and how that can be transformed again into the butter, cheese and clotted cream that we know and love today. It's an exploration of the science, history and politics of what makes mammals different from every other life form on earth.

The Kingdom of Kush - Nubian...

The Kingdom of Kush, an ancient African civilization, flourished along the Nile River in what is now modern-day Sudan. This powerful kingdom played a crucial role in the history of northeastern Africa, often interacting with its northern neighbor, Egypt. The land of Kush was known for its rich natural resources, strategic location, and unique cultural identity, which set it apart from other civilizations of the time.
Geographically, Kush was centered in the region known as Nubia, a stretch of land between the first and sixth cataracts of the Nile. This location provided fertile lands for agriculture, supported by the annual flooding of the river. Unlike Egypt, which relied heavily on the predictable flooding of the Nile, the Kushites also adapted to drier conditions, developing irrigation techniques to sustain their crops. The region was abundant in valuable resources such as gold, ivory, ebony, and exotic animal skins, making it an important trade hub in the ancient world. These resources attracted merchants from Egypt, the Mediterranean, and even as far as the Middle East, contributing to the kingdom's economic strength.
Kushite civilization was heavily influenced by its relationship with Egypt, but it also maintained distinct cultural and political traditions. Early Kushite settlements date back to around 2500 BCE, and by the time of the Egyptian Middle and New Kingdoms, Kush had grown into a formidable power. Egyptian pharaohs often sought control over Nubia due to its wealth, leading to periods of conquest and integration. However, Kush was not merely a passive recipient of Egyptian influence. It developed its own identity, blending Egyptian religious beliefs with native Nubian traditions, which would later be reflected in Kushite art, architecture, and burial practices.
