Summary

“IMAGINE you were sleeping wearily on your bed, your mind gazing shrilly on a dream you once had years ago while growing up as a child – the dream of becoming a media guru, a top show TV presenter in one of the popular media outfits. But as it is now, maybe after twenty years or so . . . that dream now seems to be a mirage of a lonely desert, totally unreachable, far-fetched and out of sight! So in grinding defeat you buried your face in your hands like a wretched demon on a graveyard, yawned and wasted your thoughts in your spacious, elegantly or perhaps not-so-elegantly decorated Renaissance bedroom! . . . [And] So you heaved heavily over the tragic death of your dream of ever becoming a media celebrity, perhaps in one of these popular media like CNN, BBC, Voice of America, Al Jazeera, you name it!. . . But then suddenly, having given up on your dream of becoming a media personality, and while you were musing over your predicament, of how tough life could be after many years of working your fingers to the sun, the phone rings . . . “Hello,” the voice said, ‘I'm Clancy Hotny, the producer of. . .’, and before you could say Jack Robinson the word strikes a chord in you like a ragging thunder, ‘. . . Good Morning America!” or ‘Oprah Winfred!’ or ‘Larry King Live!’ ” . . . The truth is, whether you realize it or not, and like most men that would instinctively make an instant assessment of the curve and contour of a lady they’ll like to spoon around with, seduce or get married to (for those with noble purpose), “producers make an instant assessment of your” media ability in thirty seconds or less in a phone conversation before the real, traditional conversation ensure! And within that moment of brief chat which might appear to you as nothing serious - just a telephone conversation – the truth is, and I am sorry to burst your bubble at this moment – this isn’t just an ordinary telephone conversation! It is the pathway to your long awaited dream! In fact, contrary to what you might think, right at that minute you are being interviewed! You are being screened! You are being auditioned and judged!”Becoming a media dinosaurs like Larry King, Oprah Winfrey, Garrison Keillor, Ira Glass or Femi Oke is more of an art than science. A French woman haunted by her encounter with an American-German pianist-composer who is obsessed with Arnold Schoenberg's portrait, flies home with her lively sister and a volume of Adorno's letters to Thomas Mann. While the impossible heroine unpicks her social failures the pianist reaches towards a musical self-portrait with all the resonance of Schoenberg's passionate, chilling blue. A novel of angst and high farce, Blue Self-Portrait unfolds among Berlin's cultural institutions but is more truly located in the mid-air flux between contrary impulses to remember and to ignore. Noémi Lefebvre shows how music continues to work on and through us, addressing past trauma while reaching for possible futures.

When you read about what I got up to you’re going to say I got what I deserved. You’re right—I totally agree. Many of you won't like me no doubt and that’s ok—I understand, I really do. I’m not all bad though.I left the Isle of Skye in the early eighties to begin my nursing course in Edinburgh and it's fair to say I embraced the Capitals temptations with arms wide open. When I moved into a shared flat I met Bill, a musician, and got involved with his band Low Down, you know, helping them out, doing a bit of driving and humping gear about - it was great fun. Low Down were truly phenomenal. Man, I totally loved their music. We took drugs, I mean, I took drugs. Nothing heavy, just recreational-like.I met a lot of girls who I didn’t treat right and I’m not proud of my behaviour—honest. Nursing is a female-dominated profession and male nurses were thin on the ground. The opportunities for getting up to mischief were many. I worked hard and played harder.A lot of stuff I regret now. Especially what I did to Lisa – and others. Anyway, it couldn’t last, could it? The way I was living – something had to give. And it did.

The twisty roads—and twisted tales—of the Appalachian Mountains make for distracted driving in western Pennsylvania.    Ghostly travelers are said to wander the lonely roads of western Pennsylvania. A creeping fog rises from Blue Mist Road, and stories of car crashes, lynchings and even strange beasts haunt this isolated stretch outside Pittsburgh. Is it the angry spirit of a jealous husband or a gypsy king who stalks Erie County’s Axe Murder Hollow? Shades of Death Road in Washington County may be host to phantom coal miners killed during a deadly labor dispute. With firsthand accounts and historical research, authors Thomas White and Tony Lavorgne travel the backcountry roads and byways of western Pennsylvania to discover their ghost tales and mysterious legends.   Includes photos!   “The authors include a history of each road along with the supernatural legends and other unexplained activity. Surprisingly, they are able to provide possible explanations for most of the alleged hauntings, but admit that they cannot account for every one, which allows the roads in question to keep their allure and spooky possibilities.” —PopCultureGuy
