Summary

Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Harold Bell Wright, ‘The Shepherd of the Hills.’

The Shepherd of the Hills is Harold Bell Wright's most famous work. In The Shepherd of the Hills, Wright spins a tale of universal truths across the years to the modern-day reader. His Eden in the Ozarks has a bountiful share of life's enchantments, but is not without its serpents. While Wright rejoices in the triumphs, grace, and dignity of his characters, he has not naively created a pastoral fantasyland where the pure at heart are spared life's struggles and pains. Refusing to yield to the oft-indulged temptation of painting for the reader the simple life of country innocents, Wright forthrightly shows the passions and the life-and-death struggles that go on even in the fairest of environments that man invades. The shepherd, an elderly, mysterious, learned man, escapes the buzzing restlessness of the city to live in the backwoods neighborhood of Mutton Hollow in the Ozark hills. There he encounters Jim Lane, Grant Matthews, Sammy, Young Matt, and other residents of the village, and gradually learns to find a peace about the losses he has borne and has yet to bear. Through the shepherd and those around him, Wright assembles here a gentle and utterly masterful commentary on strength and weakness, failure and success, tranquility and turmoil, and punishment and absolution. This tale of life in the Ozarks continues to draw thousands of devotees to outdoor performances in Branson, Missouri, where visitors can also see the cabin where the real Old Matt and Aunt Mollie lived.

Harold Bell Wright was a best selling American author of the first part of the 20th century.

Between 1903 and 1942, this minister-turned-author wrote nineteen books, several scripts for stage plays, and several magazine articles. At least fifteen movies were made from his novels. Seven of Wright's books appeared on the top ten best sellers lists, two of them twice, including a number one seller in 1914, a number two in 1916 and a third best seller three times.

Becoming immediately famous, the novel was translated into many foreign languages and has since been published in innumerable editions. This book is credited with being a catalyst to change public opinion in the United States against slavery, which was ultimately abolished as a result of the war between the Northern and Southern States in 1861-65. Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian-born artist, was one of the first creators of pure abstraction in modern painting. His forms evolved from fluid and organic, to geometric, and finally to pictographic. Kandinsky was also an accomplished musician and believed in the concept that color and musical harmony are linked. He even claimed that when he saw color he heard music. Listen to this abridged audio of his insightful writing.

Stories are one of mankind’s greatest artistic achievements. Whether written down or spoken they have an ability to capture our imagination and thoughts, and take us on incredible journeys in the space of a phrase and the turn of a page.

Within a few words of text or speech, new worlds and characters form, propelling a narrative to a conclusion with intricate ease. Finely crafted, perfectly formed these Miniature Masterpieces, at first thought, seem remarkably easy to conjure up. But ask any writer and they will tell you that distilling the essence of narrative and characters into a short story is one of the hardest acts of their literary craft. Many attempt, but few achieve.

Three darkly comic novels from the two-time Whitbread Award winner whose “masterful restraint . . . reveals an author in complete control of her artistry” (The Guardian). With taut prose and mordant wit, Dame Beryl Bainbridge established a unique position for herself as “one of the most distinctive and admired voices in postwar British fiction” (The New York Times). In the three novels collected here, she deploys her signature, unforgiving insight into human nature, drawing on her own life experience to produce tightly knit tales of innocence and mischief.  The Dressmaker: For seventeen-year-old Rita, romance with an American GI feels like a Hollywood-style escape from wartime England—and the two aunts who’ve raised her. But in this Man Booker Prize–shortlisted novel, Rita soon discovers that life is nothing like the movies.   “A little triumph of economy with pent thoughts and cramped emotions that whisper frantically on when the book is shut.” —The Guardian  The Bottle Factory Outing: Working at an Italian wine-bottling factory, London flatmates Brenda and Freda anticipate a rare day of pleasure on a company outing. Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize and shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, this comic novel takes an unsettling turn only Bainbridge could deliver.   “An outrageously funny and horrifying story.” —Graham Greene  Injury Time: In this Whitbread Literary Award–winning novel, Edward and his mistress try to host a discreet dinner party, but it’s an awkward affair to say the least. With the addition of two uninvited, rather forceful guests, more than feelings will get hurt in this “comic and sinister” novel (The Sunday Times).   “A near-masterpiece . . . horribly true to life.” —London Evening Standard
