Summary

The Transvaal, 1880: two English sisters on a Transvaal farm, an English officer both love, and then the war — the siege of Pretoria, a ride through the enemy lines, and a choice made by the sister nobody expected. Haggard was in the Transvaal for the annexation and the war that followed; he wrote this in 1887, and the Boers in it are neither villains nor comedy, which was rare enough in England to be noticed.

Originally published in 1854, Walden; or, Life in the Woods, is a vivid account of the time that Henry D. Thoreau lived alone in a secluded cabin at Walden Pond. It is one of the most influential and compelling books in American literature. This new paperback edition-introduced by noted American writer John Updike-celebrates the 150th anniversary of this classic work. Much of Walden's material is derived from Thoreau's journals and contains such engaging pieces as "Reading" and "The Pond in the Winter" Other famous sections involve Thoreau's visits with a Canadian woodcutter and with an Irish family, a trip to Concord, and a description of his bean field. This is the complete and authoritative text of Walden-as close to Thoreau's original intention as all available evidence allows. For the student and for the general reader, this is the ideal presentation of Thoreau's great document of social criticism and dissent.

A Polish prince, charming and penniless, marries the daughter of a self-made French manufacturer and proceeds to spend the works, the family and the marriage. Ohnet was the best-selling French novelist of his generation and the most despised — Jules Lemaître's demolition of him is still quoted as the model of a bad review. Read him to see what a whole reading public wanted, and why the critics could not stop it.

Nicholson was born on December 9, 1866, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Edward Willis Nicholson and the former Emily Meredith. Largely self-taught, Nicholson began a newspaper career in 1884 at the Indianapolis Sentinel. He moved to the Indianapolis News the following year, where he remained until 1897. He wrote Short Flights in 1891, and continued to publish extensively, both poetry and prose until 1928. During the first quarter of the 20th century, Nicholson, along with Booth Tarkington, George Ade, and James Whitcomb Riley helped to create a Golden Age of literature in Indiana.

The Treasure in the Forest by H. G. Wells is presented in a clean English digital edition with active navigation. The book belongs to action & adventure and preserves the character of the source text for sustained ebook reading. The opening pages establish the work's atmosphere with this first movement: The canoe was now approaching the land. The bay opened out, and a gap in the white surf of the reef marked where the little river ran out to the sea; the thicker and deeper green of the virgin forest showed its course down the distant hill slope. The forest here came close to the beach. Far beyond, dim and almost cloud. Detected sections include: The Treasure in the Forest. This edition is prepared for a fluent reading experience with clear typography and no extraneous promotional material.
