Summary

Six timeless stories of supernatural terror and macabre imagination by “the 20th century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale” (Stephen King).   H. P. Lovecraft’s unique literary vision has influenced generations of authors whose work comprises its own subgenre: Lovecraftian horror. His legacy can be seen everywhere, from the HBO drama series Lovecraft Country to the enduring Cthulhu Mythos—a fictional universe first developed by Lovecraft in several of the stories included here.   An essential collection for any horror fan, this volume presents some of Lovecraft’s finest short fiction, including “The Call of Cthuhlu,” “The Dunwich Horror,” and “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” among others.

We’ve given the planet a hard time over the last couple of centuries, and she’s showing the wear and tear of her least considerate offspring. We asked our authors: Where are the signs of renewal? Are there signs of regrowth? Have we pushed nature too far? What if it’s already too late?Poems and stories from the brink... a tipping point: responding to the floods and droughts and fires all around the globe with tenderness, compassion, fear, grief and rage. Gaia is represented in all ther power and glory, and butterflies and plants sow seeds of hope, while other writers ask:How do we stop it? How do we survive it? And how do we live beyond the catastrophe on our horizon? Are we heading for recovery or extinction?Stories and poems fromAG Parker, Angela Graham, Ben Macnair, Cath Holland, Cath Humphris, Cathy Lennon, Claire Booker, Corinna Schulenburg, Diana Powell, Elaina Weakliem, Emily Ford, Jane Aldous, Jane McLaughlin, Jared Pearce, Jessica Conley, Jill Michelle, Julian Bishop, Karen Ankers, Kate Foley, Katherine Gallagher, Kelly Davis, Lesley Curwen, Lisa Clarkson, Lucy Grace, Lucy Ryan, Lyndsey Weiner, Mandy Macdonald, Michelle Penn, Natascha Graham, Ness Owen, Rachael Li Ming Chong, Rob Walton, Robert René Galván, Samn Stockwell, Simon Brod, Stevie Krayer, Tara Willoughby, Tim Dillon, Xia Leon Sloane.

This collection brings together the two holiday stories Grace S. Richmond published about the Fernald family in 1908 and 1910. In the first, On Christmas Day in the Morning, the Fernalds gather for the first time after many years as a surprise for their elderly parents. In the second, On Christmas Day in the Evening, the Fernalds, now reunited themselves, work to also bring their community together by reopening the village church for a Christmas service that’s focused on peace and forgiveness.

Although written from a child's perspective, this is not a kids book but a series of funny, poignant, and sometimes disturbing stories about life in a late 19th-century Russian-Jewish village -- the world of my grandparents. Sholem Rabinovich (1859-1916) was born in Pereiaslav, Ukraine and later immigrated to New York. His short stories about Tevye and his daughters were freely adapted into the musical FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Rabinovich's will contained the following injunction: "Let my name be recalled with laughter or not at all." His translator, Hannah Berman, was Irish of Lithuanian descent. Some of these stories may be too intense for younger children. (summary by Adrian Praetzellis)
