Synopsis

"The Invisible Man" is a science fiction novel written by H. G. Wells and originally serialized in Pearson's Weekly in 1897. It was later published as a novel the same year. The central character, Griffin, is a scientist who becomes invisible after inventing a way to change a body's refractive index to that of air. He carries out this procedure on himself, rendering himself invisible. However, he fails in his attempt to reverse it. Griffin, a practitioner of random and irresponsible violence, has become an iconic character in horror fiction. The novel begins when Griffin arrives at an inn in the English village of Iping, West Sussex, during a snowstorm. He is reclusive, irascible, and introverted, spending most of his time in his rooms working with chemicals and laboratory apparatus. His odd behavior makes him the talk of the village. When his landlady demands payment, Griffin reveals his invisibility to her in anger. An attempt to apprehend him by the police fails, as he undresses to take advantage of his invisibility, fights off his captors, and escapes.
