Summary

Bealby: A Holiday is a comic novel by H. G. Wells. Bealby is the story of the escapade of a thirteen-year-old boy when he rebels against his placement as a steward's-room boy in the great house of an estate named Shonts (his stepfather, Mr. Darling, is a gardener there) and flees—not, however, before thoroughly upsetting a weekend party where the nouveau riche couple renting Shonts is entertaining the Lord Chancellor. Bealby's week-long "holiday" has three phases.

"Three Men in a Boat" is a humorous account penned by Jerome K. Jerome and first published in 1889. The story chronicles the comedic misadventures of three friends - Jerome, George, and Harris - along with Montmorency, their spirited fox-terrier, as they embark on a boating holiday along the Thames River. What starts as a restorative leisure trip quickly becomes an uproarious journey filled with mishaps, misunderstandings, and memorable anecdotes. Through Jerome's witty narrative, the novel presents a delightful mix of absurdity and astute observations on human nature and the Victorian era's peculiarities.

A Christmas tale of John Brown's ghastly family (suburban snobs), Captain Bonaventure de Camp and his equally awful brood (a dubious crew), and poor Soavo Spohf, organist of St. Stiff the Martyr, gifted in musical ability but not blessed in looks or love. No-one could call this a great work of literature, but it definitely raises a few chuckles and it also offers a fascinating glimpse into Christmas festivities and social mores in well-to-do households in the mid-19th century. The fourth entry to John Straley's Alaska PI series finds Cecil Younger with a contract to kill.Cecil Younger is a man who takes comfort in the absurdity of the universe, and the universe is obliging him when he gets a call from his lawyer and psychiatrist, who offers him a job. A client wants to hire Younger to kill someone. Though common sense tells him murder just isn't a good career move, his finances tell him it can't hurt to meet his potential client, hoping he can succeed in appeasing him — without a dead body.Joined by the usual cast of misfits — his lawyer/psychiatrist, Dickie Stein, his girlfriend, Jane Marie, and his ward, Todd — Cecil investigates a murder that brings him back to the Centralia Massacre of 1919, an event in Alaskan history that seems to still be reaching into the present — and its dark, chilly grasp may extend to Cecil himself.

Full of amusement, this series of fictional tales starts with a Galwayman’s arrival in Tipperary’s post-famine days and portrays the daily lives of a hillside community.Written in the colloquial and lyrical language of some of our ancestors, it tells – amongst others – such diverse stories as the reliance of families on children rabbit-poaching, on the pre-dawn cattle-droving days of a young school-leaver, the re-appearance of a dead girl to her newly-born sister…along with a number of love-hate incidents, like the townie scorn for a mountainy man at the show-fair, before he walks off with the big trophy!
