Summary

'A perfect evocation of a lost world' New York Times
'I earnestly plead with you to read this book . . . so lavish and ornate that you feast rather than merely read' India Knight, The Times
A new translation of one of Italy's best-selling classic novels of all time, a sumptuous portrait of the Sicilian aristocracy in their twilight days on the eve of unification.
In the dark heart of Sicily, Prince Fabrizio, known as 'The Leopard', presides over an immense but fast-dwindling fortune. His power extends across the opulent drawing rooms of his palazzo to vast lands, and some say even to the stars themselves.

But as Garibaldi's red shirts march closer to Palermo, and Fabrizio's shrewdly calculating nephew defects to their cause, Fabrizio faces a choice: cling to the crumbling institutions of old or welcome in a new Italy.
Winner of the 1959 Strega Prize and told in a masterly new translation, The Leopard memorializes the faded splendour of the Sicilian aristocracy on the eve of revolution.
Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.
Translated by Ralph Nisbet
From Classics and Italian at New College, Oxford, Ralph Nisbet moved to Italy in 1970. After co-founding a school of English as a Foreign Language, he went freelance and became a professional translator. He completed his first draft translation of Il Gattopardo in 1997–8, entirely for love. Ralph divides his time between Bologna and the local Apennines.

'[Zimler is] a master craftsman, and this book is Art… a riveting murder mystery… spectacular' India Today
After his Jewish family fled the Catholic Inquisition in Portugal, Tiago Zarco lives a tranquil existence in colonial India, enjoying secret sojourns with his sister into the heady festivities of the local Hindu culture while evading the ruling Portuguese authorities.
But as he comes of age in sixteenth-century Goa, Ti struggles to keep the far-reaching influence of the Inquisition from destroying his family and pulling him apart from the Hindu girl he loves. And when an act of betrayal sees his father imprisoned, he is forced to hunt down the traitor and make an unimaginable choice, triggering a harrowing journey that will show him the depths of human depravity and the poisonous salvation of revenge.
At once passionate, furious and hopeful, Guardian of the Dawn is both a saga of horrifying religious persecution and a riveting, tender multicultural love story.

An Our Town for our times, The Mammoth Cheese is beautifully crafted and driven by warm, vibrant characters as it follows the residents of rural Three Chimneys, Virginia, on their journey to re-create the original Thomas Jefferson-era, 1,235-pound “Mammoth Cheese.” As the audiobook opens, the town is joyously celebrating the birth of the Frank Eleven: eleven babies simultaneously born to Manda and James Frank after fertility treatments. But as autumn progresses and the babies weaken, the community seeks to redeem itself through the making and transporting of a symbolic Mammoth Cheese to Washington, as a gift for the newly elected President Brooke. The cheese is the brainchild of August Vaughn, a farmhand by day and a President Jefferson impersonator by night, and the creation of Margaret Prickett, a single mother and cheese maker trying to save her century-old family farm.

Sheri Holman seamlessly weaves together the lives of Three Chimneys, delving into her characters’ inescapable family histories as they grapple with religion, divorce, politics, and unrequited love. The Mammoth Cheese is a triumphant exploration of the burdens and joys of rural America and the debts we owe to history, our parents, and ourselves.
