Messrs. Thomas Cook and Son have been frequently requested by their friends to supply an account of the origin and progress of their business. They consider its fiftieth anniversary, in the year 1891, a fitting occasion for complying with that request. I undertook to write the story for them, and the necessary documents were placed in my hands. If it be alleged that the firm's name appears too often in the following pages, it may be replied that this was inevitable owing to the business itself being emphatically a personal one. It has been doubted whether any member bearing the name of Cook is now connected with the firm. Examples are given in the last chapter of misapprehensions on this head. Readers of this work will learn the authentic facts, and it is probable that the work itself, in addition to communicating much novel information, will render it more difficult for an impostor to succeed in personating one of the firm or to be accepted as belonging to it.
Before they went bankrupt in 2019, Thomas Cook & Son had been in business since 1841. Starting with one man arranging a day-trip by train for Temperance campaigners, by the year of its fiftieth Jubilee, the company had opened an office on Broadway, invented Telecommuting (with real Telegraphs), started their own international bank, gained the monopoly for travel on the River Nile, provided logistical support to the British Empire in their fight against Muslim counter-revolutionaries, made Cockneys a common sight in Paris, dramatically improved conditions for Muslims undertaking their pilgrimage to Mecca, and gave a well-known French writer the inspiration to write about a man travelling around the world in eighty days. (Mr Thomas Cook took 222 days when he attempted the feat).

People today are inundated with advice, opinions, and information about how to invest. The more data you accumulate, the thinking goes, the better decisions you'll make. In The Either/Or Investor, global investment strategist Clark Winter shows that the opposite is the case, introducing a revelatory way of thinking about the markets based on finding and assessing just enough of the right information and using your common sense.According to Winter, investing comes down to making choices. All great investors employ an "either/or" filter for evaluating and simplifying the many investment opportunities available to them. The Either/Or Investor reveals how you can emulate this thought process while remaining realistic about your own goals and needs, and gives you the tools to choose among the options that modern investors face, such as:-Fear versus greed: In an anxious post-9/11 world, discover when it's smart to make an aggressive financial move.-Developed world versus developing world: Find out if you should stick with opportunities in the United States or risk those available in the emerging economies of China, Russia, India, Mexico, and Turkey.-Anti-immigration versus migration of talent: Learn to evaluate the products that immigrants introduce to the rest of the world in order to assess the value in investing in American companies that cater to new immigrant groups.-Too much information versus too little information: Use the Internet, newspapers, and TV to your advantage. (For example, get the pros and cons about China's growing economic power so you can become informed enough to act.)-Rising interest rates versus falling interest rates: Understand how changing interest rates are a good barometer for how to spend your money.Winter shows how anyone can learn to make sound decisions in a changing world by discerning trends early in an investment cycle, and then taking advantage of these trends or steering clear. Winter also explains how to choose a money manager and how to determine what the next investment opportunities might be.Armed with Winter's methods, any investor can improve his or her own investment prowess. The Either/Or Investor is a way-both judicious and daring-for choosing a better future.

A brilliant investor, a born raconteur and an overall smart-ass, Andy Kessler pulls back the curtain on the world of hedge funds and shows how the guys who run big money think, talk and act. Following on the success of Wall Street Meat, his self-published book on the lives of Wall Street stock analysts, Andy Kessler recounts his years as an extraordinarily successful hedge fund manager. To run a successful hedge fund you must have an investing edge -- that special insight that allows you to reap greater returns for your clients and yourself. A quick study, Kessler gets an education in investing from some fascinating and quirky personalities. Eventually he works out his own insight into the world economy, a powerful lens that reveals to him hidden value in seemingly negative trends. Focussing on margin surplus, Kessler comes to see that current American economy, at the apex of the information revolution, is not so different from the British economy at the height of the industrial revolution. Drawing out the parallels he develops a powerful investing tool which he shares with readers. Contrarian and confident, Kessler made a fortune applying his ideas to his hedge fund. Which only proves that they may not be as crazy as they sound.
