Summary

Have you ever seen those guitarists that sound like they know exactly what they’re doing when they’re improvising? They just seem to hit all the right notes while their playing sounds crisp and melodic, as if they’d planned it all out beforehand, or were born with a God-given sense of melody. I’d always wondered how on earth they were able to come up with such melodic and flowing lines, thinking that they must simply be gifted, or have done some serious woodshedding. Then, during one unforgettable class at music college the door was opened to a method for playing and thinking as melodically and as effortlessly as they did, and this is what I want to share with you in this eBook.

This book provides a scale-pattern free perspective on improvising, and can be used by guitarists of any level from beginners who have begun to explore scales, right up to intermediate and advanced players who are perhaps looking to become more melodic, go beyond scale patterns, or have far more control over what they play when improvising. The book is based on a 10-day program of studying and practicing the material for approximately 2 hours a day. As everyone works at a different pace, you may be able to accomplish more in one day than is scheduled in the eBook; this is fine as long as you have internalized the information before moving on.

If you’ve been playing for just a year or two, then you may find you need to spend a couple of days for each ‘Day’ in the eBook; this is fine too as the point is to understand and internalize the material, not rush to the end. All in all, this 10-day 'retreat' will do wonders for your ability to play what you want when you take a solo, and to demystify the process of improvisation on the guitar. Includes backing tracks.
Available since: 10/08/2016.

In a blend of history, memoir, and photography, the Pulitzer Prize winner paints a vivid portrait of this extraordinary American city.   Chicago was home to the country’s first skyscraper (a ten-story building built in 1884), and marks the start of the famed Route 66. It is also the birthplace of the remote control (Zenith) and the car radio (Motorola), and the first major American city to elect a woman (Jane Byrne) and then an African American man (Harold Washington) as mayor.   Its literary and journalistic history is just as dazzling, and includes Nelson Algren, Mike Royko, and Sara Paretsky. From Al Capone to the street riots during the Democratic National Convention in 1968, Chicago, in the words of Studs Terkel, “has—as they used to whisper of the town’s fast woman—a reputation.”   Chicago was also home to Terkel, the Pulitzer Prize–winning oral historian, who moved to Chicago in 1922 as an eight-year-old and who would make it his home until his death in 2008 at the age of ninety-six. This book is a splendid evocation of Studs Terkel’s hometown in all its glory—and all its imperfection.

In Playing the Mask, award-winning theatre-maker and teacher John Wright explores and demystifies mask-work: what masks do, how they do it, and, above all, what they can teach us about acting.
This book is a wonderfully accessible introduction to a fresh and innovative acting technique for actors, theatre-makers and teachers to use in training and rehearsal. A mask releases the actor to be playful, and playfulness generates ideas, finds meaning, develops characterisation – and is infinitely more fun than traditional training.
Rather than a dry guide to making masked theatre, it is about, for instance, playing Lady Macbeth in Red Nose, or Hamlet in the mask of The Victim, The Ogre or The Fool, or even Romeo and Juliet in grotesque half-masks… All in the name of liberating your creativity and, ultimately, improving your performance.
Extensively illustrated with a rich variety of masks, this inventive and pragmatic book is full of invaluable games and exercises drawn from the author's own workshops, his experience as co-founder of both Trestle and Told by an Idiot, and his pioneering mask and clown work in many professional productions.
'Brilliant, entertaining and accessible' Paul Hunter, from his Foreword
