Summary

Railways played a pivotal part in the development of New Zealand’s economy, towns and cities, and helped shape a distinctive culture. This is a comprehensive account of our railways story, from the earliest days of the colony, through rail’s growth and golden days, slow decline and recent resurgence. Going by Train details New Zealand’s railway development from its beginnings to completion of the main trunk, provincial and urban networks and the numerous branch lines reaching far-flung corners of the country. By the 1930s and ’40s, railways dominated travel and became part of the national way of life, with trains for all passengers and occasions. Graham Hutchins, who grew up in a railway town and spent many years working on the railways, recounts the locomotives, the lines, the people and personalities in rail’s colourful history. With competition from road transport, rail’s golden glow began to fade, with line closures, corporatization and reduced investment. But with renewed interest, its time has come again, with growth in tourist and commuter travel, line redevelopment and heritage restoration. This fully illustrated work gives excellent coverage of local rail’s tribulations, triumphs and tragedies, written in a very readable style. Rail fans and general readers alike will enjoy its wide-ranging topics, generous illustrations, anecdotes and personal accounts.

Britain is well-known for its churches and cathedrals; buildings of great architecture and religious grandeur that form many of our recognisable skylines. But these grand structures are also full of facts, histories and stories that you may not have been aware of.

Did you know that there are only three cathedrals in Britain without a ringing bell? Or that St Davids Cathedral, nestled away in a Welsh valley, has a very unique choir, where the top line is sung only by female choristers, aged eight to eighteen? How about that the Great Pyramids in Egypt were the world's tallest structures for over 3,870 years, until the construction of Lincoln Cathedral in 1311?

Award-wining travel writer and editor Sue Dobson takes us on a journey around the United Kingdom, showing us her highlights while providing fascinating details and stories along the way.

A happy plant makes for a happy home and a happy life; find the right plant for each room.

Indoor plants have never been so important as we realise the power of their presence in making us feel calmer and more connected to nature. But dying plants around the house are negatives you could do without!
This unique guide from an indoor plant expert explains what plants you should keep in each room, and whereabouts. It contains:
    • Easy-to-understand but horticulturally accurate information on what affects plants in each room – light, humidity and temperature.
    • What typically makes each room different, which plants best suit which room, and how to care for them so that you and the plant are happy.
    • Working with individual microclimates within that room – for example, a plant that might work on a coffee table in the middle of a room might not work on a bookshelf next to a window.
    • Invaluable information on how to arrange the plants to make stunning arrangements for your home interior.
The first half of the book focuses on the five key rooms in any home, with ideas for the reader who wants to green up specific rooms, while the second half is a comprehensive directory of house plants. Each entry has information on light level requirements and tolerance, detailed information on care and colour inspiration for styling the plant. Each plant is also rated by difficulty.
This is the most practical guide to building an indoor garden, room by room, to ensure happy plants, a happy home and happy humans.

Extensively illustrated with photos, a history of the many locomotives that became part of this British Railways region.

This book investigates the vast number of locomotives that came to the London Midland Region in 1948 upon the nationalization of the four largest railway companies in the UK. It is a class-by-class survey with over two hundred illustrations, covering all the top link and freight classes and also looking at the smaller types of locomotive, operating on branch lines and doing more humble tasks.

The author explores what happened to them, and also looks at those that eventually made their way into preservation.
