Summary

With ROMA CANES MUNDI, the journey into the past begun with ORIGINS IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT DOG BREEDS resumes, and while the first volume dealt with the dogs present between the late Paleolithic and the period when the ancient Greeks lived, the second volume is entirely dedicated to the period when ROME was born, grew, expanded, conquered much of Europe and the territories bordering the Mediterranean, and finally fell.
What were the dogs of the Romans like? What kind of relationship was there between them and their four-legged companions?
All this will be examined through literary, historical, and artistic sources with the help of zooarchaeological findings and genetic analysis.

A traveler’s guide to the history and sites of the World War I battle in the Marne River valley in France.

The First Battle of the Marne was one of the most pivotal battles in history. Fought outside Paris in September 1914, it turned the tide of the German invasion of France and robbed Kaiser Wilhelm II of his best chance of winning the First World War.

The battle began when the French and British armies launched a massive counter-offensive, and it ended—after five, tense days of fluctuating fortunes—in a German retreat. The so-called “miracle of the Marne” was among the most crucial episodes of the war, and yet no complete, in-depth guide to the battlefield has been available until now in English.

Andrew Uffindell begins his guidebook with a gripping account of the battle, followed by a series of easy-to-follow tours of the battlefield. Each tour covers a particular sector in detail, using vivid eyewitness accounts to reveal what the fighting was like for the men in the front line.

This unique and highly illustrated book enables readers to explore the battlefield and retrace the course of those dramatic events for themselves. It gives directions to dozens of museums, cemeteries, and monuments, including the memorials to the famous “taxis of the Marne.” It will be fascinating reading for anyone interested in the Great War, and an essential companion for visitors keen to see the actual terrain over which the battle was fought.

Afloat on the Ohio, An Historical Pilgrimage, of a Thousand Miles in a Skiff, From Redstone to Cairo. There were four of us pilgrims—my Wife, our Boy of ten and a half years, the Doctor, and I. My object in going—the others went for the outing—was to gather "local color" for work in Western history. The Ohio River was an important factor in the development of the West. I wished to know the great waterway intimately in its various phases,—to see with my own eyes what the borderers saw; in imagination, to redress the pioneer stage, and repeople it. A history of the Scottish dietary staple, plus recipes, from the author of The Scottish Baking Bible. Bere is the native barley of Orkney. In the past it was an important multi-use crop and a staple of the Scottish diet, though its use declined as more easily processed crops were introduced. Bere is still grown on Orkney farms by an agricultural contractor employed by the Birsay Heritage Trust who run the Barony Mill, Orkney’s last operating water mill. Here the grain is milled into beremeal, a cream-colored flour with a distinctive, earthy, nutty flavor. In this book acclaimed food writer Liz Ashworth traces the story of bere from its Neolithic origins to the present day, providing useful culinary tips and recipes on how this ancient grain can be introduced to the modern kitchen for enjoyment. Recipes are included for Breads, Scones, Tea Breads, Cakes, Tray Bakes, Puddings, Pastry Dishes, and Sweet and Savoury Biscuits.

I like to think of the Archaeologist from a more advanced society who would dig up this album hundreds of years from now, listen to it, and wonder why we needed a comedian like Barry Crimmins in the early days of the millennium. What would be the purpose of a person standing on a stage getting big laughs stating obvious facts that were already accepted by even the youngest of children in his modern society? The only society that doesn’t need a Barry Crimmins would already have hundreds of millions of Barry Crimmins.

After finding Jesus at a suburban megachurch, young Jamie Wright trades in the easy life on the cul-de-sac for the green fields of Costa Rica. There, along with her husband, kids, and the family cat, she intends to serve God and make converts. But she soon loses faith and falls into a funk of cynicism and despair. Fortunately, Knives the cat is there, looking on with just enough disinterest to make her laugh...and dare her to try another way. That other way turns out to be telling the truth. She launches a renegade blog, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, which against all odds soon wins a large and passionate following around the world. Slowly, she begins to see that being a bad missionary-awkward, doubtful, skeptical-can mean that you're just the kind of person someone else might be willing to hear...and that loving others is just as much about changing yourself as it is about converting them.
