'I went as hard as I could for as long as I could'When Tomás Ó Sé retired from the Kerry senior panel in 2013, he did so as one of the longest-serving players in intercountry history and one of its most prolific winners. 'Tomás epitomised everything that Kerry football is all about. His commitment, determination and never say die attitude were plainly visible every time he took to the pitch. He was a warrior and the best wing back that I have seen play the game.'Éamonn Fitzmaurice, Kerry senior team managerBut his drive and determination weren't forged in a vacuum: they came from growing up in a family and place where Gaelic football was all that mattered. For Tomás and his brothers Marc and Darragh, football always came first – each of them inspired by the larger-than-life personality of their uncle Páidí, the talisman of Kerry's fabled team of the early 1980s.In his memoir, an account of his upbringing and time in the Championship cauldron competing alongside and against the sport's modern greats, Tomás writes candidly about life as a member of Ireland's greatest sporting dynasty: the victories and disappointments, the rivals and roguery, the clashes and confrontations … not to mention the tremendous responsibility that came with donning the green and gold of Kerry.Moving, thrilling and frequently hilarious, The White Heat is an exploration of what it means to eat, sleep and bleed Gaelic Games.

Your prep guide to this test called life—from outdoor skills to taming the urban wild, car care to cooking, handy manning to managing a hangover.

Armed with the proper set of skills, there is no beast a man cannot tame, no problem he cannot solve, no wine he cannot appraise, no meat he cannot grill, and no woman he cannot amaze. All that lies between you (or your man) and becoming uber-evolved is mastering the wisdom contained in this humble book called Manskills.

But you must learn these lessons well. When that angry she-bear lunges, you won’t have time to Google “surviving animal attacks.” When your boss’s wife offers you a morsel of cave-aged Gorgonzola she’s not expecting you to wolf down that hunk of blue mold and say “Cheesy!”

With instructive illustrations, the skills are organized by categories such as:Shelter Savvy—remove a stripped screw, handle a jackhammer, stop a toilet from running . . .Wild Ways—Build an igloo, stitch your own wound, catch a fish without a rod and reel . . .Social Graces—sew on a button, order wine like you know what you’re doing, ease a hangover . . .Emergency!—save someone from drowning, use a fire extinguisher, bust down a door . . .Romantic Prowess—plan the perfect romantic dinner, meet her parents, pick a diamond . . .

    to name just a few

By developing your manskills, you’ll avoid life’s pitfalls and become a complex, sophisticated person of confidence, competence, and vigor. Good for you!

    Shishapangma - The alpine-style...

In 1982, following the relaxation of access restrictions to Tibet, six climbers set off for the Himalaya to explore the little-known Shishapangma massif in Tibet. Dealing with a chaotic build-up and bureaucratic obstacles so huge they verged on comical, the mountaineers gained access to Shishapangma's unclimbed South-West Face where Doug Scott, Alex MacIntyre and Roger Baxter-Jones made one of the most audacious and stylish Himalayan climbs ever.
First published in 1984 as The Shishapangma Expedition, Shishapangma won the first ever Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature. Told through a series of diary-style entries from all the climbers involved, Shishapangma reveals the difficult nature of Himalayan decision-making, mountaineering tacti and climbing relationships. Tense and candid, the six writers see every event differently, reacting in different ways and pulling no punches in their opinions of the other mountaineers – quite literally at one point. Nonetheless, the climbers, at the peak of their considerable powers and experience, completed an extremely committing enterprise. The example set by their fine climb survives and several new routes (all done in alpine style) have now been added to this magnificent face.
For well-trained climbers, such ascents are fast and efficient, but the consequences of error, misjudgement or bad luck can be terminal and, sadly, soon afterwards two of the participants were struck down in mountaineering accidents – MacIntyre hit by stonefall on Annapurna's South Face and Baxter-Jones being caught by an ice avalanche on the Aiguille du Triolet. In addition their support climber, Nick Prescott, died in a Chamonix hospital from an altitude-induced ailment. Shishapangma is a gripping first-hand account of the intense reality of high-altitiude alpinism.
