Synopsis

The Bible in Spain (1843) is George Borrow's vivid account of his travels through Spain in the 1830s as an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, attempting to circulate the Protestant Scriptures in a deeply Catholic and politically unsettled country. Part travel narrative, part missionary memoir, and part picaresque adventure, the book combines ethnographic observation, linguistic curiosity, dramatic dialogue, and romantic incident. Its pages evoke inns, prisons, muleteers, gypsies, clergy, officials, and outlaws, placing it within the great nineteenth-century tradition of travel writing while retaining the energy of autobiographical romance. Borrow was an unusual Victorian writer: linguist, wanderer, Bible distributor, and fascinated observer of marginal peoples, especially the Romani, whom he had studied in earlier travels. His restless temperament, Protestant convictions, gift for languages, and appetite for encounter all shaped this book. Spain's civil conflict, religious conservatism, and regional diversity gave him a stage on which to dramatize both spiritual mission and cultural discovery. Readers interested in Victorian prose, Iberian history, religious controversy, or adventurous travel literature will find The Bible in Spain richly rewarding. It is not merely a missionary record, but a compelling portrait of a country and a singular mind moving through it.

    And they nearly made it...
The Real Rock Follies is a real-life story of youthful trust betrayed, dreams of stardom dashed and cruel lessons learnt. The three girls, then in their late twenties, learned too late that in the harsh showbiz world you can hardly trust anyone, not even your friends. However, despite everything, they got the last laugh. Their promising career couldn’t be returned to them but they enjoyed the huge satisfaction (both emotional and financial) that the ruling confirmed that the creative concept behind Rock Follies was fully theirs.
October 21, 1982. Three singers stand on the steps of the High Court with large cheques and broken dreams. The women are Annie (Annabel Leventon, the book’s author), GB (Gaye Brown), and Di-Di (Diane Langton). Their dream was of a British three-woman rock band, unique and different from anything that had gone before. They called themselves Rock Bottom. They were raunchy, rude and hilarious – the contemporary media described them as ‘a cross between the female Rolling Stones and the female Marx Brothers’ – and they nearly made it.
Until Thames Television stole everything and made a major award-winning series called Rock Follies, about them, based on them, but without them. It made stars of the three lookalikes playing them. And they lost everything.
A common enough tale of showbiz betrayal. Except that they fought back. At the offset of the Court trial, the Head of Drama at Thames TV sarcastically quipped, ‘three little actresses against the might of EMI?’ Forget it, the three ladies were told. Move on. They didn’t. They took the case to the High Court and won. Breach of Confidence is now on the Statute Books and it has become one of the defining cases in Intellectual Property.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
In colonial Quito, a young girl observing the world from a narrow window will become Manuela Espejo, guardian of the memory of her brother Eugenio, the enlightened physician who dreamed of a continent's freedom. Many years later, across the ocean in Cádiz, her husband, José Mejía Lequerica, raises his voice in the Cortes of Cádiz, which drafts Spain's first liberal Constitution, challenging centuries of colonial silence. Two destinies separated by the sea and united by the same light: the light of the Enlightenment that crosses borders and transforms societies.

Amidst historical speeches, lost letters, and a forbidden love with Gertrudis Salanover on the banks of the Ebro River in Cádiz, this novel reconstructs, chapter by chapter, the lives of two real-life figures who were pioneers in igniting the flame of American independence. Based on verifiable sources—the Journal of the Cortes of Cádiz, wills, letters, legal documents, biographies, and Quito's first newspaper, Primicias de la Cultura de Quito —and supplemented with the necessary imagination where the archives fall silent, "The Light of Two Worlds" tells the story of a marriage, a secret passion, and a revolution that began before weapons were taken up: in words, in letters, and in the courage to express independence ideals aloud.

Mike and his wife, Barbara, moved to Lincoln, Illinois, in 1972. The town of 17,000 was charming, friendly, and safe. As employees of Lincoln College, a small, private junior college, they quickly grew to enjoy the subtle pleasures of small-town living. Then the campus was hit with a series of burglaries and a student disappeared. Finally, the murders began. This is Mike Hartnett’s personal story, memories that have taken him more than forty years to write. This is not a true crime exposé or a who-dunnit mystery. This is simply a story about one man on the periphery of a series of events that devastate a community for a time. It is a story about the guilt that lingers and the questions that remain.
    About the Author:
Mike Hartnett was a retired high school English/Speech teacher and business journalist (magazine columnist and editor and newsletter publisher), winning awards from the American Society of Business Press Editors. He led a memoir-writing group for the Douglas County Senior Citizen Center and was a co-leader of a men’s writing group at the Douglas County Jail.
Mike is the co-author of a play, Worthy of the Name, which was presented at Chicago’s Cultural Affairs Center, and a collaborator of a readers’ theater production, Prose & Cons, Voices From Behind Bars.
