Summary

This book provides simple, clear, in-depth explanations of all the topics in the AQA GCSE specification 4180 syllabus but it will prove invaluable to students at many levels on many courses and to the independent reader. It can be used as a stand-alone home study course, as a classroom text, as a reference text or just for pleasure for those who love to think about what makes people tick.Psychology describes up-to-date research as well as some classic psychology studies and even debunks one or two psychology research myths. It leads the reader through all the topics in the syllabus as a teacher would in a classroom setting. Topics are presented as a series of lessons followed by "e;Check Your Understanding"e; sections, which are designed to help you check and retain the information in each lesson. An assessment record provided at the end of the book will help you keep track of your progress. Lessons are interactive with many opportunities to jot down your thoughts and reactions, reflect on how a topic relates to your own experience, discuss with other people and become more involved with the material presented.Students can pinpoint the topics they are studying for GCSE by using the table mapping the GCSE specification against the lessons in this book. For those studying outside formal classrooms there are guidelines about how best to approach your studies. The book assumes that readers have no previous knowledge of psychology and among the topics covered are: A* Conformity and Obedience - would you press a button to kill someone just because you are told to do so? Many people would, it seems.A* Sex and Gender - do girls and boys, men and women behave so differently? If so, why?A* Memory - how does memory work and how accurate is it?A* Non-Verbal Communication - do we reveal our true feelings in our body language?A* Development of Personality - what exactly is Anti-Social Personality Disorder?A* Prejudice and Discrimination - are we bound to discriminate against people who are unlike us?A* Learning - how to remove your fear of spiders/snakes/flying/open spaces or anything else using the principles of learning.A* Aggression - is aggression born into us? Is it in our hormones? Or do we learn to fight?A* Research Methods and the Ethics of Psychology - psychology is based on evidence, not just ideas. But what type of study constitutes good evidence and how should we treat the people in our studies?

Innovation is a process by which new ideas, services, and sources of value are brought to life. Yet approaches to the pursuit of innovation are often far from novel, relying on stale methodologies applied against well-defined problem sets. Transformative innovation requires something else. Not just methodologies, but mindsets. Not just focusing on known challenges, but on unknown opportunities. Not just hoping for breakthrough by default, but realizing breakthrough by design. In The Breakthrough Manifesto, a renowned business innovation leader teams up with a social-personality psychologist to offer that something else—a collection of ten visionary principles to obliterate barriers to change and ignite a whole new level of creative problem-solving. Drawing upon decades of experience working with the world's best-known organizations and their teams, the authors provide practical advice that goes beyond "business as usual" for successfully tackling intractable challenges. The Breakthrough Manifesto explores why these principles are critical for the current times and how they can spark breakthrough and unlock potential for you and your teams. Whether you're an executive or manager, product or service designer, educator or student, this book is a must-listen for anyone inspired to change the world or transform their own place in it.

Hywel Roberts and Debra Kidd's Uncharted Territories: Adventures in learning is a book of prompts, provocations and possibilities designed to nourish creativity and generate ideas that will get teachers and pupils excited about learning. In this time of high-stakes testing, growing mental health issues among young people and increasing pressure on teachers to focus on rote repetition and practice papers, we have to step back and ask: "What is the purpose of education?" If you think it is to get children through tests, then this book is probably not for you. If, however, you think it is to develop wisdom in children - the capacity to think, to apply knowledge, to empathise, to weigh up evidence, to consider consequences and to make informed choices - then this book is most definitely for you. Rooted in practice and grounded in research, Uncharted Territories invites a reassessment of what curriculum coverage can look like and provides an abundance of hooks into exploratory learning that place learners - of whatever age - knee-deep in dilemma, so that they are thinking deeply, analytically and imaginatively. These are not knowledge organisers or schemes of work; rather they are inspirational forays into imagined contexts for learning which, as fantastical as they may appear, always have the real world as their destination. Signposted by story starters and inductive questions - not to mention the beautiful illustrations which are sure to fire children's imaginations - Hywel and Debra's innovative routes to learning will help teachers stray from the beaten track of the curriculum and instil in learners a sense of purpose as they discover, manipulate and apply knowledge and skills across a range of collaborative, cross-curricular problem-solving contexts. Each chapter focuses on a different place - such as a remote castle or a mysterious cave, where the learning will be applied and challenged - and is packed with starting points and "what ifs ...?" to establish rich landscapes for exploration and a wide range of opportunities for discussion and writing. To help map out the territory ahead, Hywel and Debra guide the teacher around the key learning landmarks linked to each context's overarching concepts and lines of inquiry, and point out the many different curriculum areas to which the explorations naturally lend themselves to. The authors go further by offering transferable ideas which can be adjusted to work with whatever age group, as well as a variety of context-based tasks to enable the teacher to explore how elements of, for example, literacy and/or numeracy could be incorporated in order to save curriculum time. While Uncharted Territories is a rallying call to arms for the imagination, in each of its chapters Hywel and Debra also delve into the why in order to present the teacher with a comprehensive debrief of the learning processes and the theoretical and academic underpinning. Furthermore, the authors provide a helpful listing of drama techniques and relevant books and poems that can be incorporated into the learning journeys, as well as useful advice on how to assess and evidence their outcomes. Designed for use with learners of all ages, from early years to secondary.

Loss isn’t one-size-fits-all. It comes in a million different forms—and all of them hurt. Whatever your situation, there is hope: you are not alone, you will get through this, and you can experience true joy again! An estimated two-hundred million Americans face the pain and confusion of loss every year, and most of us have no idea how to handle it. We’re thrown into the deep end of grief without a life preserver, desperately trying to stay afloat in a sea of shock, anger, frustration, heartbreak, and hopelessness. Mark Negley knows what it’s like to face the pain of loss and fight to build a new life from the ashes. Over the past thirty years, he has faced cancer, raised a special needs child, lost his beloved mother, nearly lost his wife in a car accident, and supported her through depression and mental health issues resulting from her brain injuries. Tragically, in 2016, Mark received the biggest blow of all when his wife of twenty years took her own life. Frustrated by the lack of relatable resources to help navigate his grief recovery, Mark set out to redefine the loss experience. After five years of research, in-depth interviews with loss survivors, and leading grief groups, he realized that the problem isn’t how we experience grief; the problem is that traditional models make it seem too formulaic. He found that grief recovery isn’t a linear progression from one clearly defined stage to the next; rather, it’s a series of concentric circles—like ripples in a pond—that emanate from a center point of impact. Those circles form three “interconnected” phases of recovery called Survive, Alive, and Thrive. In Survive-Alive-Thrive: Navigating the Journey from Loss to Hope to Happiness, Mark Negley takes you on a journey through his loss experiences, using his story and the stories of several others to teach his revolutionary new model of grief recovery. You don’t have to walk this difficult road alone. With the help of Mark and others, you can navigate from loss to hope and then to happiness. You don’t have to settle for survival! Set your sights higher and learn how to thrive again!

  • Getting Over Equality - A Critical Diagnosis of Religious Freedom in America - cover

    Getting Over Equality - A...

Questions of religious freedom continue to excite passionate public debate. Proposals involving school prayer and the posting of the Ten Commandments in schools and courtrooms perennially spur controversy. But there is also a sense that the prevailing discourse is exhausted, that no one seems to know how to think about religious freedom in a way that moves beyond our stale, counterproductive thinking on this issue. In Getting over Equality, Steven D. Smith, one of the most important voices now writing about religious liberty, provocatively contends that we must get over our presumption mistakenly believed to be rooted in the Constitution that all religions are equally true and virtuous and "authentically American." Smith puts forth an alternative view, that the courts should promote an ideal of tolerance rather than equality and neutrality. Examining such controversial examples as the animal sacrifice case, the peyote case, and the problem of aid to parochial schools, Smith delineates a way for us to tolerate and respect contrary creeds without sacrificing or diluting our own beliefs and without pretending to believe in a spurious "equality" among the variety of diverse faiths.

All children lie. But when your child lies to you, it can feel like a personal betrayal. Lying is a healthy and inevitable part of child development. But when do lies become a problem? In this book, psychologist Victoria Talwar, director of the Talwar Child Development Lab at McGill University, presents practical, science-based strategies to address lying and foster truthfulness in children, from early childhood to the teenage years. Kids need to learn what honesty looks like in different social situations, and also how to tell the truth in ways that do not hurt others' feelings—a complicated task! Parents and caregivers will learn how to use stories and examples to have proactive conversations with children about honesty, and how to model honest behavior for children. Talwar shows listeners how to respond effectively when a child lies (as they inevitably will). Backed by years of psychological research, this common-sense, practical guide reveals which parenting strategies promote truthfulness in children—and which ones don't.
