The Flame, written in Italian, is the first in a trilogy of books looking at passion and love. This book, set in 1883 Venice, follows the relationship of an aspiring artist and his mistress, a famous but ageing actress and was inspired by the author's relationship with the actress Eleonora Duse. The novel is highly descriptive and dramatic, reflecting the characters' passion. The second two books in the trilogy were never published.
