Summary

This collection of personal correspondence provides a rare window into the private life of the toweringnineteenth-century philosopher.Friedrich Nietzsche was the most iconoclastic philosopher of modern history. He is known to the world as the scathingly brilliant provocateur behind such foundational works as Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, and Twilight of the Idols. This was Nietzsche as he addressed himself to the public. But in this collection of his personal letters, we discover a very different man: Nietzsche the devoted son; the caring friend; the university student; the shy and distant lover. Comprised of correspondence between Nietzsche’s inner circle—including several revelatory letters to his sister—Unpublished Letters gives readers a never-before-seen look into the philosopher’s daily life.

This year marks the centenary of Harold Wilson's birth, the fiftieth anniversary of his most impressive general election victory and forty years since his dramatic resignation as Prime Minister. He was one of the longest-serving premiers of the twentieth century, having won a staggering four general elections, yet, despite this monumental record, his place in Labour's history remains somewhat ambiguous.
By the end of his two periods in power, both the left and right of the party were highly critical of Wilson - the former regarding him as a traitor to socialism, the latter as contributing directly to British decline.
With contributions from leading experts in the fields of political study, and from Wilson's own contemporaries, this remarkable new study offers a timely and wide-ranging reappraisal of one of the giants of twentieth-century politics, examining the context within which he operated, his approach to leadership and responses to changing social and economic norms, the successes and failure of his policies, and how he was viewed by peers from across the political spectrum. Finally, it examines the overall impact of Harold Wilson on the development of British politics.

Eventually, mafia boss Nicola Gentile intervened to settle a dispute involving the brothers' associates. Pete Carlino's grandson, author Sam Carlino, uncovers intimate photos and new revelations, including confirmation that Pete Carlino met with Salvatore Maranzano in New York and that the death of both men on September 10, 1931, may not have been a coincidence.

Jatadharer Bakshi Samagra is a comic anthology (trilogy) based on a facetious cheat, penned by the legendary humorist - Rajshekhar Basu alias Parashuram, whom he constructed as one who used to get people under his spell with his gift of the gab. Spontaneity and imagination were such a natural disposition of this cheat that the gullible fell for his sleight repeatedly and almost happily and voluntarily till they realized it again.
One of the leading lights among the Bengal intellectuals of that era, Rajshekhar Basu alias Parashuram, served us well with his characteristic humor-coated sarcasm that made fun of the irrationality and deep superstitions that were plaguing the society and its people. Yet his writings ring as foresight even in this age of information overflow.

  • Battalion Commanders at War - US Army Tactical Leadership in the Mediterranean Theater 1942-1943 - cover

Battalion Commanders at War - US...

    Steven Thomas Barry

Most histories of the US Army in World War II view the Mediterranean Theater of Operations primarily as a deadly training ground for very green forces, where lessons learned on the beaches of Oran, in the hills of the Kasserine Pass area, and at the collapse of the Tunis bridgehead all contributed to later success in Western Europe. Steven Barry, however, contends that victory in the MTO would not have materialized without the leadership of battalion-level commanders. They operated at a high level, despite the lack of combat experience for themselves and their troops, ineffective leadership at higher levels, and deficiencies in equipment, organization, and mobilization.Barry portrays these officers as highly trained, adaptable, and courageous in their first combat experiences in North Africa and Sicily. Their leadership, he argues, brought discipline, maturity, experience, and the ability to translate common operational guidance into tactical reality, and thus contributed significantly to battlefield success in North Africa and Sicily in 1942-1943. To explain how this happened, he examines their prewar experiences, including professional military education and unit training exercises; personal factors such as calmness and physical resilience under fire; and the ability to draw upon doctrine, creatively apply the resources at their disposal, and clearly define and communicate mission goals and means. He also reveals how battalion leaders incorporated technological innovations into combined arms maneuvers by employing tank capabilities and close air support doctrine. As Barry's assessment shows, these battalion commanders were not the sole reason for the Allied triumph in North Africa and Sicily, but victory would not have been possible without the special brand of military leadership they exhibited throughout those campaigns. Under their leadership, even inexperienced units were able to deliver credible combat performance, and without the regular army battalion leaders, US units could not have functioned tactically early in the war.One of the few studies to focus on tactical adaptation at the battalion level in conventional warfare, Barry's audiobook attests to the pivotal value of professional military education — and makes an important contribution to today's "organizational learning" debate — while providing an in-depth view of adaptation of US infantry and armored forces in 1942-1943.
