Sinopse

In "John Brown: An Address at the 14th Anniversary of Storer College," Frederick Douglass delivers a powerful and impassioned tribute to the abolitionist John Brown, articulating the moral imperatives of his actions in pursuit of justice and equality. Douglass employs a rhetorical style that is both eloquent and persuasive, drawing on historical context to situate Brown's struggle within the broader tapestry of the fight against slavery. This address not only highlights the sacrifices of the abolition movement but also challenges the listener to reflect deeply on the societal implications of racial injustice, resonating with the era's fervent debates surrounding civil rights and morality. Frederick Douglass, a former enslaved person turned leading abolitionist, was profoundly influenced by his own experiences of oppression and his relentless pursuit of freedom for all. Having witnessed firsthand the brutalities of slavery, Douglass emerged as a compelling orator and writer, dedicated to advocating for social change. His relationship with John Brown was rooted in mutual respect and shared objectives—both recognized the necessity of radical measures in the quest for emancipation, setting the stage for Douglass's poignant homage in this address. This address serves as a crucial artifact not only for understanding Douglass's philosophy and the abolition movement but also as a clarion call for contemporary readers to engage with the ongoing struggle for equality. It is a significant work that offers insight into the moral frameworks of resistance and encourages reflection on the legacy of both Douglass and Brown, making it an essential read for anyone interested in American history and social justice.

A memoir about zookeeping, and what animals taught me about feminism.

In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a 'man's job'. So, she looked to the animals under her care to prove them wrong.

Despite what Erna's colleagues seemed to think, the females of the animal world were far from weak and demure. Elephant matriarchs led their herds; female bonobos revelled in sexual exploration; emu mothers abandoned their chicks to the care of their fathers. Her colleagues wouldn't dare tell a female tiger that hunting was a 'male's job' - why were they so intent on limiting Erna?

In this insightful and delightful book, Erna blends memoir and pop science to tell a fiercely female story. She recounts a life spent caring for animals in a fast transforming industry, and dives into scientific evidence and evolutionary history to debunk the myths that once held her back.

John Joseph Kelly—the quintessential Good Samaritan—changed the lives of thousands of people in need, first as a devoted Catholic priest; then as a champion of the poor and a father figure to troubled minority youth; and finally, as a one-on-one mentor offering hope and guidance to hardcore San Quentin inmates.

Kelly was a spiritual superstar and a role model for anyone who truly desired to make a difference in their own community. When he died in 2019 at age ninety, thousands who knew him recalled the credo that marked his life: "We need to take what God has given us, discover it, and use it for justice and good."

Father Kelly did exactly this when he traded his Catholic collar for a work shirt in 1979. He dropped his cassock in dramatic fashion after his final mass to pursue "justice and good" for the next forty years. Kelly showed the courage of his convictions when he struggled with Church bureaucracy, hypocrisy, internal politics, silk vestments, and processions, ultimately deciding he could help more people by being less faithful to Catholic dogma, and do more as a lay person devoted to the teachings of Jesus, Muhammad, and Krishna. Kelly then dedicated his life to inspiring others to become instrumental in helping thousands of people—many of them homeless—who were hungry and needed food, shelter, and adequate clothing.

The Last Sea Dog tells the story of Jean-Luc Van Den Heede's life and his many sailing adventures, focussing on his triumph in the 2018/19 Golden Globe Race. Jean-Luc has rounded Cape Horn 12 times and completed six solo circumnavigations. These have resulted in five race podiums and one world record, which he still currently holds. He has been on the podium twice in the Vendée Globe single-handed race around the world, coming third in 1990 and second in 1993. More recently he won the Golden Globe Race in 2018/19 at the age of 73. This race was run as a fiftieth anniversary of the 1968 race of the same name won by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. While the restriction of no assistance and no stopovers were not particularly unusual, more challenging were the requirements to sail the race 'as in 1968' with yachts similar to those available in that year and, except for safety equipment, no modern technology allowed. No satellite-based navigation aids were available to the sailors and they had to use a sextant to navigate around the world as Robin had done fifty years previously. Jean-Luc was born in Amiens, far from the sea, and he became a maths teacher. Nevertheless, he developed a passion for competitive sailing. He is friendly and easy to approach, but he is also a formidable competitor with an abundance of courage and perseverance. This personal account of his life and the Golden Globe Race is an amazing story of a man who has faced the toughest times and sea and won through

Hope taught me the meaning of life, Tina taught me the meaning of love.
It's not everyday you meet a golden retriever in Thailand.
When Niall came across a dog shackled to a short chain and in a poor state of health something reminded him of his personal battle with addiction. He knew he had to rescue her immediately – golden retrievers are rare in Thailand – but there was just something about this dog in particular that told him she was destined for more.
He named her Tina, and what she did next is an incredible tale of survival, hope and love. Despite her terrible treatment at the hands of humans, she refused to distrust them or feel sorry for herself, and only opened her heart wider – always with a grin (yes dogs can smile) and a reassuring wag of her shaggy yellow tail.
From the minute Tina was free of her chains, she got on with what needed to be done, inspiring a dog hospital to be built and named after her and helping dogs from all over the world – whether they're street dogs from Thailand or rescue pups in Montana. The movement behind Tina has not stopped.
    This is her story.
