Summary

François Rabelais's 'Gargantua & Pantagruel' is a monumental work of French literature, known for its satirical and humorous take on society, education, and human nature. Written in the 16th century, this classic novel consists of five books following the adventures of the giant Gargantua and his son Pantagruel, exploring themes of morality, religion, and the absurdities of the world. Rabelais's unique blend of comedy, philosophy, and folklore makes this work a significant contribution to Renaissance literature. The book is filled with witty wordplay, social commentary, and larger-than-life characters, making it a must-read for those interested in the evolution of literature and the human experience. François Rabelais, a French Renaissance writer and physician, drew upon his extensive knowledge of classical texts, theology, and humanist ideas to craft 'Gargantua & Pantagruel.' His background as a scholar and a man of the world is reflected in the depth and breadth of his writing, which continues to captivate readers centuries later. Rabelais's bold and imaginative approach to storytelling sets him apart as a literary giant of his time. I highly recommend 'Gargantua & Pantagruel' to anyone with a love for classic literature, satire, and thought-provoking content. Rabelais's masterful storytelling and profound insights into the human condition make this work a timeless masterpiece worthy of exploration and appreciation.

In 1963 the Indonesian Army that threatened Borneo numbered 330,000 men, plus three thousand Commandos. Of these, six thousand were within 20 miles of the Borneo frontier. This grew to thirteen thousand in early 1965. From mid-way through 1964, British troops and their allies who were defending the border started to make offensive incursions into Indonesian Borneo—these operations were codenamed "Claret". Taken into account the confrontational nature of the campaign, casualties sustained in Borneo were surprisingly light. That in the whole of the Borneo campaign there were no fatalities among the RAF supply-dropping transports was extraordinary. The border area between the Indonesian and Malaysian parts of Borneo was one of the most inaccessible areas of mountainous jungle anywhere in the world—an entire army was kept supplied in the field for the complete campaign. This is the exciting account from a pilot who flew the dangerous flying missions and relates the tenseness and stresses of Jungle life in those dangerous days.

Before the mid-19th century, European intervention in much of tropical Africa was extremely difficult because of the disease gradient. The combination of malaria and yellow fever commonly killed off half of European troops stationed in West Africa each year. It was the reverse of the conquest of the Americas, where introduced diseases wiped out 50 million indigenous Americans, opening the land to settlement and greatly reducing the ability to resist. This was much less of a problem in temperate southern Africa, accounting for the Dutch being able to set up a colony there in the 17th century.
The political situation was also important. Germany did not exist as a nation until 1871, when the German Empire was declared, following the decisive defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Germany united into a single nation under the former king of Prussia, who became kaiser (meaning emperor). Previously, Germany had been a linguistic and cultural region fragmented into a welter of kingdoms, dukedoms, margraviates, bishoprics, and free cities.
The German Empire would prove to be the most short-lived of all, because, along with the Russian and Ottoman Empires, it did not survive World War I. In 1919, Germany lost all of its African colonies, which then accrued as League of Nations mandated territories either to France or Britain. The mandate over German South West Africa, the future Namibia, was placed under British control by proxy, and its day-to-day administration was handled from South Africa. Ultimately, South Africa absorbed South West Africa as a virtual province and resisted pressure to cede authority to the United Nations for decades. However, the contest between Germany and Britain on the African continent during the late 19th century would also create the conditions that led to the North Africa Campaign in World War II.

In the first-ever Seven Seas history of the world's female buccaneers, Pirate Women: The Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled the Seven Seas tells the story of women, both real and legendary, who through the ages sailed alongside—and sometimes in command of—their male counterparts. These women came from all walks of life but had one thing in common: a desire for freedom. History has largely ignored these female swashbucklers, until now. Here are their stories, from ancient Norse princess Alfhild and warrior Rusla to Sayyida al-Hurra of the Barbary corsairs; from Grace O'Malley, who terrorized shipping operations around the British Isles during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I; to Cheng I Sao, who commanded a fleet of four hundred ships off China in the early nineteenth century.

Author Laura Sook Duncombe also looks beyond the stories to the storytellers and mythmakers. What biases and agendas motivated them? What did they leave out? Pirate Women explores why and how these stories are told and passed down, and how history changes depending on who is recording it. It's the most comprehensive overview of women pirates in one volume and chock-full of swashbuckling adventures that pull these unique women from the shadows into the spotlight that they deserve.
