Sinossi

In "Democracy in France: January 1849," Fran√ßois Guizot navigates the tumultuous waters of a nation on the cusp of profound political transformation. This work reflects Guizot's examination of the nascent democratic sentiments flourishing in post-revolutionary France, employing a historical lens that intertwines political theory with empirical observations. Characterized by a rigorous analytical style, Guizot's prose deftly critiques the concept of democracy against the backdrop of French history, illuminating the challenges and potential paths emerging from the revolutionary fervor of the time. Fran√ßois Guizot, a prominent historian and statesman, served as a minister and played a crucial role in shaping French political thought during a time of significant upheaval. His background as a scholar, with a focus on the history of France, provided him a unique vantage point to explore the implications of democratic governance amid the reverberating effects of the 1848 Revolution. Guizot's insights reflect his engagement with ideas of liberty, representation, and the development of the modern state, culminating in a call for cautious progress in governance. "Democracy in France" is essential reading for those keen on understanding the complexities of democracy's evolution, not only in France but within broader political contexts. Guizot'Äôs balanced approach invites readers to reflect critically on contemporary democratic practices by drawing lessons from historical precedents, making this work a pivotal contribution to political philosophy and the study of modern governance.

Is the West finished as a political idea? In recent years, observers have begun pointing to signs that this transatlantic community is eroding. When the European Union expanded, the classic European nation state was in decline. Now, nationalism is on the rise. Furthermore, nations within the EU are less willing to cooperate with the US on policies that require sacrifice and risks, such as using military force alongside the US. Today, following the twin shocks of Brexit and Trump's election, the concept of a unified Western transatlantic community seems to be a relic. But, in Pax Transatlantica, the international historian Jussi Hanhimäki explains why the West is far from over.

Hanhimäki argues that—despite Trump's inflammatory, dismissive rhetoric—NATO continues to provide robust security for its member states. NATO has survived by expanding its remit and scope, and it is viewed favorably by member states overall. Moreover, the transatlantic relationship boasts the richest and most closely connected transcontinental economy in the world. Lastly, Hanhimäki traces the parallel evolution of domestic politics on both sides of the Atlantic, focusing on the rise of populism. He contends that populism is not causing a rift between the US and Europe. Rather, the spread of populism evinces that their politics are in fact closely integrated.

A chilling exposé of how one of history’s most infamous regimes distorted the ancient past to engineer a deadly future.
In Ancient Myths and Nazi Propaganda, Davis Truman unveils the shocking ways Adolf Hitler and the Nazi elite co-opted classical mythology, archaeology, and pseudo-history to fabricate the myth of Aryan supremacy. Drawing from original documents, Nazi-era publications, and modern scholarship, this groundbreaking work exposes how ancient symbols and legends were weaponized to create a false historical narrative, one that fueled genocide, war, and the darkest chapter of the twentieth century.
From misused Greco-Roman iconography to twisted interpretations of Indo-European migration theories, Truman traces the roots of Nazi ideology through a manipulated lens of antiquity. He explores how fabricated “evidence” of ancient Aryan civilization was used to justify racial purity laws, territorial expansion, and the cultural erasure of entire populations.
With compelling clarity and academic precision, Ancient Myths and Nazi Propaganda offers a powerful warning: when history is rewritten to serve an ideology, the consequences are catastrophic.
Perfect for readers of history, politics, WWII studies, and anyone seeking to understand how ancient and modern myths can be used to manipulate truth and justify atrocity.

Libertarianism is a political philosophy that places individual liberty at its core, emphasizing the importance of personal freedom, limited government, and voluntary cooperation. Rooted in centuries of intellectual thought, libertarianism advocates for a society in which individuals are free to pursue their own goals and aspirations as long as they respect the rights of others. This emphasis on freedom and responsibility makes libertarianism distinct from other political ideologies, which often prioritize collective goals or centralized authority.
The roots of libertarian thought can be traced back to classical liberalism, a tradition that emerged during the Enlightenment. Philosophers such as John Locke, Adam Smith, and John Stuart Mill laid the foundation for the principles that underpin libertarianism today. Locke's theories of natural rights and property ownership, Smith's advocacy for free markets, and Mill's emphasis on individual autonomy and freedom of expression all contribute to the philosophical underpinnings of libertarianism. In the modern era, thinkers like Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, and Ayn Rand have further developed these ideas, providing a framework for how a free society can function effectively.
At its heart, libertarianism is built on the idea of self-ownership—the belief that individuals have an inherent right to control their own lives, bodies, and property. From this principle flows the concept of voluntary interaction, which holds that relationships and exchanges between people should occur through mutual consent rather than coercion. Libertarians reject the use of force, except in cases of self-defense or the defense of others, and they champion the principle of non-aggression as a moral guide.

A personal, intimate, memoir spanning 70 years, in three parts, describing my childhood in the UK and New Zealand, my 35 years as a New Zealand diplomat, and the hundreds of amazing individuals I met on the way, from farming folk to Kings, Queens and Presidents. Part One is the story of an English boy growing up on a farm in rural Devon and Somerset in an extended family, and then, aged 9, moving to rural New Zealand. It covers my school years, my year as a volunteer teacher, aged 17, at an all boys school, in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga and my year as a university student in a still divided Germany. Part Two describes my career as a junior, then senior, New Zealand diplomat, and my postings in Fiji, Canada, Geneva, Samoa, Germany and Singapore, the last three as Ambassador. Part Three argues that New Zealand should become a republic in the Commonwealth, with its own Head of State. It describes, too, my liberating journey from Anglicanism to freedom from any religion. I have aimed to tell the memoir with a sense of humour, humility and (for the most part) optimism!
