Innovation in the Media - the road to change

Summary

The media are at the end of a cycle and at the beginning of a new model that is still unpredictable. For decades, the industry enjoyed solid profits, a certain tranquillity and clear rules. The presence of high barriers to entry hindered the progress of competitors and several key markets were, in fact, oligopolies.

This book tells how a stable industry was buffeted by winds that seriously threatened its essential pillars. Free access and Internet development caused a dramatic drop of the value of the contents. The public could often find information and entertainment at no cost, therefore beginning to move away from the media that were poorly differentiated and predictable in terms of subjects and approaches.

The authors do not restrict themselves to writing a chronicle of those transformations: they deepen the causes and propose solutions. In their view, companies in the sector have lacked the discipline necessary to keep pace with innovation, adapt to change and make learning a constant and priority activity. The industry needs better leaders, managers with vision, who can take risks and break the monotonous cycle of systematic imitation of success formulas that already belong to the past.

The Eastern Han Dynasty emerged from the chaos and turmoil that followed the collapse of Wang Mang’s Xin Dynasty. After usurping the Han throne in 9 CE, Wang Mang attempted radical reforms, including land redistribution and changes to the currency system. However, his policies destabilized the empire, leading to widespread discontent, natural disasters, and peasant uprisings. Among these, the most significant was the Red Eyebrows Rebellion, which contributed to the downfall of Wang Mang’s rule. In 23 CE, rebel forces stormed the capital, Chang’an, killing Wang Mang and leaving the empire in a state of disarray.
In the wake of this collapse, Liu Xiu, a distant relative of the former Han imperial family, seized the opportunity to restore Han rule. He first distinguished himself as a military leader, defeating rival factions and consolidating power. In 25 CE, he declared himself Emperor Guangwu and established the Eastern Han Dynasty, with Luoyang as its new capital. Unlike the Western Han, which had ruled from Chang’an, the relocation of the capital symbolized a fresh start, one that aimed to correct the failures of the past.
Emperor Guangwu’s early reign was marked by efforts to stabilize the empire and reestablish Han authority. He adopted a cautious approach to governance, reducing taxes and reviving Confucian principles to strengthen the legitimacy of his rule. Unlike Wang Mang’s drastic policies, Guangwu relied on gradual reforms to restore economic stability. He also worked to rebuild the imperial bureaucracy, appointing competent officials who could help him govern effectively. By reinforcing Confucianism as the guiding philosophy of the state, he sought to restore order and unity among the people.

    Excerpt:

To be a “Buddhist” without making any attempt to put the principles into practice is nonsensical. Buddhism is essentially something to do rather than something to believe. The attainment of the higher wisdom will, for most people at least, be a long task which may not be fully achieved in this lifetime. But those who are sincerely treading the path will stand out. They will have something about them which subtly marks them out. They will be mindful, compassionate, considerate to others. While they will not rush round offering good advice to all and sundry unasked, they may well be the kind of people whom those in need of advice and help will instinctively turn to. They will be good citizens of the world, for the very reason that they are not too much caught up in its meretricious attractions.

The Federal government of the U.K. of Great Britain and Ireland segmented Ireland into 2 independent polities: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. The Federal Government of Ireland Act 1920 was handed down May third, 1921. Both parts were to stay inside the UK, and the Act included arrangements for supreme reunification.
Northern Ireland was established with a devolved federal government and stayed a part of the U.K. Most occupants of Southern Ireland didn't recognize the self-proclaimed Irish Republic, choosing to recognize the larger Northern Ireland. The area of Southern Ireland withdrew from the U.K. and ended up being the Irish Free State, which is today the Republic of Ireland, following the Anglo-Irish Treaty.
In this book, we will look at further details of the partition of Ireland.

"As a major fan and promoter of Julian of Norwich, whom I call 'my favorite mystic', it is genuinely exciting to find such a faithful but freeing translation of Julian's long-lost Showings. Now they are no longer lost—for anyone!" —Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and ContemplationIn this contemporary translation of one of the most beloved and influential mystical texts of all time, Julian of Norwich: The Showings brings the message and spirituality of this 14th-century mystic to 21st-century readers. Revelations of Divine Love, the first book published in English attributed to a woman, is also included.Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. In her visions, God was not angry and wrathful. Instead, the three properties of God were presented as life, love, and light, and all of His creation was good, including his servant, man. In Julian's version, man is not to blame for his sin; sin is something that he must experience and overcome in his spiritual journey with God.Her message for today's readers is simply this:She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; they should be honored, but not dwelled upon.God's love has nothing to do with love and retribution and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well. This book contains some of the most profound spiritual writing ever written and remains a perennial favorite among Christians. This book was previously published as The Showings of Julian of Norwich. This new edition includes a foreword by Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upwards.
