Summary

For thirty years Francis Westfield, a high school science teacher in the Stoke-On-Trent area has been collecting in a scrapbook details about Jack the Ripper. Every time a new book or theory emerged on the subject he would study it and evaluate it. In 2010 he decided to read all books on the subject he still had not accessed and see if a better approach could be found. After seeing that all but one book, which tried a Royal family connection which turned out to be fanciful, took the original 5 police suspects at the time, then added an extraneous character brought in as the author's obvious own pet theory, he realised that no book on the subject had compared all the suspects in an attempt to eliminate them down to one individual serial killer. This he was immediately determined to do. He went on a search engine and found that there had been two hundred suspects named since 1888 (a useful round number!) and set about finding out not only their names and individual backgrounds but how they were supposed to have carried out the crimes and what were their motives.

The book includes firm explanations of why even the newest theories (propounded in October 2014 and December of the same year called: Naming Jack the Ripper and the journalist theory of the cartman (carman and his route) are wrong as well as pencil drawings of the best likeness of Jack the Ripper by one of the sisters of the author (Helen Westfield who is an artist) based on an e-fit profile produced by Laura Richards , the head of analysis for the Metropolitan Police's violent crime command on 20.1.06. Each victim is profiled and how they died. The area and conditions in society at that time in Whitechapel are described, getting rid of the romantic fog myth along the way. The vigilance committee and its members and the role they played is looked at.

A potted history of each of the suspects is shown with a picture of each suspect if available next to each character. Analysis by FBI and other profilers is recorded. My analysis suggesting from map data and position of the bodies in the geographical pattern they were found that the culprit had two dwelling places over the time of the series of murders and that he had good local knowledge is included. The theory by Arthur Conan Doyle that it could have been a female killer (Jill the Ripper theory) is also included in the analysis.

Finally a mention of all the circumstantial evidence I collated against the only suspect Joe Barnett who the more I tried to falsify or eliminate from the investigation the more that character fitted the evidence. In the last 127 years there have been over 200 suspects for Jack the Ripper the first documented serial killer in the world and many theories have been propounded in order to settle the matter once and for all. All my book suggests is that this scientific approach may give the best chance of showing who he (or she) was.

At six-foot-four-inches and 375 pounds, Jack Garcia looked the part of a mobster, and he played his part so perfectly that his Mafia bosses never suspected he was an undercover agent for the FBI. "Big Jack Falcone," as he was known inside La Cosa Nostra, learned all the inside dirt about the Gambino organized crime syndicate and its illegal activities-from extortion and loan-sharking to assault and murder. The result was a string of busts and a quarter-million-dollar contract put out on his life.Making Jack Falcone tells the incredible true story of Garcia's audacious attempt to become only the second agent (after "Donnie Brasco") to become a made man in the Mafia. Readers will join Garcia as he attends "Mob School," an intensive course of study designed to teach him everything he needs to know about the Mafia, its operations, and its attitudes. An unprecedented glimpse into the inner workings of the FBI, the book also pulls no punches as Garcia reveals how sometimes the agency ran smoothly and criminals were collared according to plan, while other times tempers flared over the progess of cases.A fascinating inside look at the struggle between law enforcement and organized crime, Making Jack Falcone sheds new light on two organizational cultures that continue to exert an unparalleled grip on the American popular imagination.

The life and law enforcement career of the legendary Victorian police detective: “Caminada’s story is a remarkable one . . . [a] fascinating book.” —The Manc   On December 6, 1886, Arthur Foster leaves the Queen’s Theatre, Manchester, with a pocket full of gold and a lady bedecked with diamonds on his arm. He hails a hansom cab, unaware that a detective has been trailing him as he’s crisscrossed the streets of the city. As the cab pulls away, the detective slips inside and arrests the infamous “Birmingham Forger.”   The detective is Jerome Caminada, legendary policeman and real-life Victorian super-sleuth. A master of disguise with a keen eye for detail and ingenious methods of detection, Caminada is at the top of his game, tracking notorious criminals through the seedy streets of Manchester’s underworld. Relentless in his pursuit, he stalks pickpockets and poisoners, unscrupulous con artists and cold-blooded murderers. His groundbreaking detective work leads to the unraveling of classic crime cases such as the Hackney Carriage Murder in 1889, secret government missions, and a deadly confrontation with his arch-rival, a ruthless and violent thief.   Caminada’s compelling story bears all the hallmarks of Arthur Conan Doyle and establishes this indefatigable investigator as one of the most formidable detectives of the Victorian era—and a real-life Sherlock Holmes.   “The real-life figure who inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's infamous detective, Sherlock Holmes, may have been uncovered.” —Daily Mail

You may think Richmond, Kingston and the neighbouring districts are prosperous, safe and law-abiding in comparison to the hazardous, crime-prone centre of London, but you would be mistaken. For, as Jonathan Oates shows in this gripping book, appalling crimes have shocked the local community and left their mark on the history of the area over the last two centuries. Among the sensational criminal cases he reconstructs in chilling, forensic detail are the murder of the French count and countess who fled the reign of terror in revolutionary France only to become the victims of their own servant, the bigamist suspected of poisoning, the female servant who was hanged for chopping up her mistress, the poverty-stricken elderly couple who swallowed belladonna in a suicide pact, the jobless accountant who shot his three children and committed suicide, and the killing of two teenage girls who were assaulted, then stabbed, then thrown in the Thames. As he takes the reader through these stories of malice, perversion and despair, Jonathan Oates reveals the dark, sometimes lethal side of the history of Richmond and Kingston.
