Sinopsis

In "France and England in North America," Francis Parkman embarks on an epic journey through the early colonial encounters between France and England on the North American continent. Comprising seven volumes, Parkman's work displays meticulous research and vivid prose, capturing the complexities of political intrigue, cultural exchange, and military conflicts from the 16th to the 18th centuries. His narrative weaves together history, geography, and personal anecdote, creating a tapestry that illustrates the broad sweep of colonial ambitions while maintaining an intimate grounding in the experiences of individuals caught in these tumultuous times. Parkman's literary style, marked by eloquent descriptions and suspenseful storytelling, positions this work as both a historical account and a compelling narrative, echoing the Romantic literary context of the 19th century. Parkman, a prominent American historian, was deeply influenced by his formative experiences in the rugged landscapes of the American frontier. His passion for history and literature, combined with his extensive travels and firsthand observations, inspired him to explore the intricate dynamics between European powers in shaping early American history. The blend of his scholarly rigor with a storyteller's flair makes his work notable in the canon of American historical writing. This magnum opus is a must-read for history enthusiasts and scholars alike, offering rich insights into the colonial era's geopolitical tensions. Parkman's scholarship not only informs our understanding of early American history but also compels readers to reflect on the enduring legacies of these encounters. It's an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in the foundational narratives that shaped North America.

A richly detailed, in-depth look at fixed stars and their role in affecting astrological predictions.    Since prehistory, humanity has been held in thrall by the night sky, captivated by the mystery of the stars. Seeking to make sense of such a magical overhead landscape, people used the stars to relate beliefs, creation stories, and mythologies. And just as the fixed stars have ancient origins in human life, their astrological interpretations get right to the heart of our lives.   Celebrated astrologer Bernadette Brady melds modern astrological techniques with Egyptian and early Greek mythology to bring astrologers to a deeper understanding of the horoscope and provides delineations for using fixed stars in chart interpretation. Her methods open a window on the fixed stars, revealing how a major star in a person’s chart indicates the stage of life in which it is active and how it affirms the person’s life journey through the mythology that the star represents. Though the fixed stars have been watched and studied for all of human history, Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars continues to be the astrological bible for how to use them in practice. This is an essential resource that should be on every astrologer’s bookshelf.  The book includes Paran maps, star maps, star phases, and mythologies for over sixty stars,New insights into the natal use of fixed stars, as well as their use in mundane astrology,Extensive appendices of graphs and tables to help astrologers find rising or setting dates for any given location,And a listing of 176 stars with their 21st-century positions. Unguessed Kinships - Naturalism...

    Steven Frye

It took six novels and nearly thirty years for Cormac McCarthy to find commercial success with All the Pretty Horses, followed by major prizes, more bestsellers, and Hollywood adaptations of his work. Those successes, though, have obscured McCarthy's commitment to an older form of literary expression: naturalism. McCarthy's work tends to darker themes: violence, brutality, the cruel indifference of nature, themes which would not be out of place in the writing of Jack London or Stephen Crane. But literary naturalism is more than the oversimplified Darwinism that many think of. Nature may be red in tooth and claw, and humans are part of nature, but the humanity depicted in naturalist literature is capable of love, selflessness, and spirituality, as well.

In Unguessed Kinships, Steven Frye illuminates all these dimensions of McCarthy's work. In his novels and plays, McCarthy engages both explicitly and obliquely with the project of manifest destiny, in the western drama Blood Meridian, the Tennessee Valley Authority-era Tennessee novels, and the atomic frontier of Alamogordo in Cities of the Plain. McCarthy's concerns are deeply religious and philosophical, drawing on ancient Greek philosophy, Gnosticism, and Nietzsche, among other sources. Frye argues for McCarthy not merely as a naturalist writer but as a naturalist in the most expansive sense.
